this week, the new chief 460 vehicle arrived. the vehicle was purchased from day automotive in monroeville, pa. the graphics were designed and placed by a company from buffalo, ny. the vehicle is a 2008 ford expedition. it features all led lighting. the radios will be placed in the vehicle on thursday and friday of this week. it is unknown at this time what will happen to the old chief 460 vehicle. fire alarm upgraded to 2nd alarm structure fire tuesday, september 23rd - around 6pm, west ridge was dispatched to the former steris plant on west 23rd for a fire alarm. as crews were responding, they were informed that there was an actual fire in the former manufacturing part of the building. chief 463 arrived on location and reported smoke showing. tower 10 arrived on location and stretched a leader line into the building with an attack line attached. engine 17 dropped around 900' of supply line from tower 10 to the hydrant on west 23rd street. meanwhile, crews from engine 16 along with west lake truck 489 and engine 482 assisted in ventilation, overhaul and manpower. after crews cleared that part of the building, they were directed over to the office area for reports of smoke in that area as a result of the earlier fire. the fire was located in a paint booth that was being dismantled with welding equipment. crews cleared the scene around 8:45pm. neighboring fire departments hold joint training session monday, september 22nd - this evening, crews from west ridge and kearsarge met up at the millcreek mall to hold a joint training session. the purpose of tonight's training was to familiarize members with master stream and water supply operations. during the evolutions, the engine company supplied the truck from the opposite fire department. tonight's training also allowed some of the newest members to work on hitting the hydrant and to fly the ladder trucks. tower 10 assists fairview with smoke in the building sunday, september 21st - this evening, tower 10 was dispatched to assist fairview fd for smoke in the building at pleasant ridge manor in fairview township. tower 10 with a crew of 5 arrived on location on the west side of the building and setup for aerial operations. with assistance from rescue 539 and engine 552, crews found that there was a rooftop hvac unit that had malfunctioned. after the hvac unit was secured, crews cleared the scene shortly afterwards. engine 17 runs mutual aid structure fire in fairview friday, september 19th - today, engine 17 was dispatched to assist fairview fd at erie rubber works for a reported structure fire. first arriving crews arrived on location and found a dumpster fire next to the loading docks that had extended to the structure. engine 17 arrived on location with a full crew. their assignment was to establish the connection to the sprinkler system. responding companies were stations 52, 50, 48 and 46. photo courtesy of west lake fd. high winds keep crews busy sunday, september 14th - around 8pm, west ridge along with millcreek paramedics were dispatched to the 6200 block of sterrettania road for a vehicle accident with possible entrapment. chief 462 arrived on location and advised that this call was actually in mckean township. 462 also reported one vehicle with moderate damage that had collided with a tree. after investigating, it was not really sure if the car hit the tree or if the tree hit the car. engine 17 with a crew of 7 arrived on location and secured the vehicle and used a chainsaw to clear the huge tree branch from the roadway with assistance from a penndot crew. during this time, truck 12 handled a tree down in the road in the 3100 block of sterrettania road. after those 2 calls had cleared, truck 12 handled another tree blocking the roadway at grubb and zimmerly. the trees down were result of the high winds related to the remits of hurricane ike passing through the area. 9/11 - never forget thursday, september 11th - it was 7 years ago when the unimaginable happened. on that date, 343 fdny firefighters lost their lives saving lives. tonight, the west ridge and west lake fire departments came together to celebrate the bravery and honor all the victims who died on that date. truck 489 (west lake) along with tower 10 setup a memorial at west 12th and peninsula. if you were in the area, you would have noticed that both ladders were raised into the air. the 2 ladders were meant to represent the 2 world trade center towers that collapsed that day. at the top of each ladder was an american flag. one of the american flags was a flag that had flown in iraq. for the next 4 1/2 hours, several people stopped in to see the fire apparatus and to talk to the firefighters. at one point, a gentleman and his son stopped by. the firefighters found out that his brother was a fdny firefighter who perished on 9/11. talking to him brought chills to the firefighters in attendance. when the sun went over the tree line, the emergency lights on both trucks along with engine 483 and rescue 485 were all turned on at once. this is a memorial that has happened for the past few years and will continue to take place for several years to come. fire alarm turns out to be actual fire friday, august 22nd - around 10pm, west lake was dispatched for alarm bells at harrington laundry on west 20th in their first due. chief 481 arrived on location and reported that the sprinkler system had been activated. after investigating further, a fire was located on side charlie in the rear of the building. at this time, the assignment was upgraded to the structure box assignment. this brought tower 10 from west ridge along with engine 502 from lake shore. tower 10 (crew of 6) arrived on location and positioned on the alpha/bravo corner. the crew assisted with ventilation and manpower. the fire appeared to start in a pile of industrial shop rags. the sprinkler system kept the fire in check. crews cleared the scene shortly around 11pm. west ridge participates in local airport disaster drill wednesday, august 20th - at 7pm, erie airport notified millcreek fire of an alert 2 at tom ridge field. moments later the alert was upgraded to an alert 3 aircraft down. although this was just a drill, it was treated just like any other alert at the airport. engine 17 with a crew of 7 responded and was ordered to enter the airport grounds off of shenk avenue and stage. at this time, e-17 officer (chief 460) was asked to establish staging command. the crew from 17 was tasked with patient care. there were about 40 actors spread throughout the north field of the grounds portraying injured or deceased passengers. the mock disaster drill concluded around 8:15pm. this disaster drill is held every 3 years as mandated by the faa. fire departments, ems companies and other agencies that participated in the drill were west lake fd, lake shore fd, west ridge fd, kearsarge fd, airport fd, county hazmat, county public safety, erie city fd, mps, emergycare, west county paramedics, local media, county ham radio operators, fairview fd, girard fd, lake city fd and the american red cross. photo courtesy of west lake fire department. ladies and gentleman, the new mr. & mrs. l-12!!! saturday, august 16th - congratulations to andy and lindsey kilmer!! andy, truck 12 lieutenant, and lindsey were united in marriage this afternoon at st. julius church in west lake. family, friends and fellow firefighters were in attendance. after the ceremony, the wedding party loaded up onto tower 10 and engine 483 (west lake) for the ride over to the reception. the reception was held at the lawrence park country club. after a wonderful meal and the traditional reception activities, the party began. at one point, the firefighters were seen on the dance floor dancing to the cupid shuffle and other dance songs. the weather could have not have been any nicer. again, congratulations mr. and mrs. kilmer!!! view additional photos early morning vehicle accident on west ridge road saturday, august 16th - at 4:50am, crews were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on west ridge road just east of millfair road. the wreck was reported by a girard boro police officer. crews arrived on location and found 1 vehicle head on into an utility pole with 3 patients. rescue 488 (west lake) arrived on location and immediately stabilized the vehicle and was ready to put the hurst tools into service. it was found that there was no entrapment. engine 17 arrived on location seconds later and assisted with patient care, vehicle stabilization and pulled a safety line. squad 507 (lake shore) was special called to the scene due to the 2 on duty millcreek paramedic als units tending to the other patients. the patients were transported priority 1 to the trauma center. fire police handled traffic and crews cleared the scene at 5:04am. view additional photos 2744 mckee road vehicle fire wednesday evening wednesday, august 13th - this evening at 8:45pm, west ridge was dispatched to 2744 mckee road for a reported vehicle fire. chief 462 arrived on location and reported a vehicle off the road with a fire in the engine compartment well off. engine 17 with a full crew of 7 arrived on location and put an attack line into service. crews had the fire knocked down very quickly. fire police and millcreek township police handled traffic during the incident. crews cleared the scene at 9:14pm. view additional photos west ridge takes 1st place at local chili cook off sunday, august 10th - for the past several years, john v. schultz furniture store has sponsored a chili cook off to benefit local fire departments. this year was the first year that wrfd entered the competition. the chili that wrfd entered was prepared by lindsey seib with assistance from her future husband, lt. andy kilmer. after 2 days of friendly competition between four local fire departments, wrfd took first place. lawrence park fd came in 2nd, kuhl hose took 3rd place while perry hi-way took 4th place. as a result of taking 1st place, andy and lindsey won $999 worth of furniture from john v. schultz. donations were also accepted during the cook off with the donations being split between the 4 departments. a 50/50 also took place with half of the money raised again split between the 4 departments. although the weather was not a nice as it was on saturday, a decent turnout came out to try the different recipes. congratulations to all the fire departments that entered and special congratulations to lindsey and andy for winning. then just was everyone was departing, a pretty rainbow was spotted off to the east!!! vehicle overturned on west 23rd street thursday, august 7th - this evening, west ridge along with millcreek paramedics were dispatched to west 23rd and asbury for a vehicle accident with one of the vehicles on the roof. chief 462 arrived on location, established west 23rd street command and reported 1 vehicle on the roof with the driver self extricated. as the driver was tended to by millcreek paramedics, crews from engine 17 and truck 11 handled debris and fluids. crews remained on scene until the vehicle was overturned and towed away. west ridge divers participate in presque isle water rescue drill saturday, august 2nd - this morning, the millcreek township dive team participated in a water rescue drill at presque isle state park. the dive team consists of members from west lake, west ridge and lake shore fire departments. along involved in the drill were presque isle lifeguards, the erie county sheriffs dive team, presque isle park police along with other various agencies. this water rescue drill is held every other year to allow the various agencies to work together and to practice various skills. august begins with a first due structure fire friday, august 1st - at 8:06am, west ridge along with mutual aid from west lake, kearsarge and the millcreek township fire response team responded to 4836 king arthur court for a reported basement fire. chief 462 arrived on location and reported a working fire with fire visible from the basement windows. tower 10 arrived on location and stretched an attack through the back door. crews encountered heavy smoke through the kitchen as they made their way to the basement. when crews reached the fire in the basement, crews found the fire coming from some shelves with extension to the ceiling and back walls. engine 9 arrived on location and laid a 4" supply line from the nearest hydrant. engine 442 from kearsarge arrived on location and assisted with fireground operations along with truck 929. the cause is currently under investigation. crews cleared the scene at 11:20am. chief 462 had command. photo courtesy of west lake fire department. new assistant chief 461 voted upon by membership monday, july 21st - at tonight's monthly meeting, it was announced that assistant chief 461 tom christiansen resigned from that position due to him moving out of the wrfd district. tom however will stay on as a member at wrfd as an active honorary member. as a result, a special election was held. after voting took place, charlie heffner was elected to fill out the 2008 term as assistant chief 461. members spend weekend at training class sunday, july 20th - this weekend, several west ridge fd members spent their weekend on local training sessions. firefighters hornaman, hickin and carson spent this past weekend at a structural burn session sponsored by perry hi-way fd. the 16 hour class consisted of hose management, nozzle patterns, fire and smoke behavior and search patterns. class concluded on sunday with those in attendance having the opportunity to perform some live fire training. firefighter carson, who recently received his black helmet as a senior firefighter, was able to get some excellent nozzle time. firefighter hornaman even had the opportunity to use his helmet video camera. view additional pictures, view helmet camera footage from inside structure two cars racing causing one of them to rollover friday, july 18th - late this evening, crews were alerted for a vehicle with rollover in the 4100 block of west ridge road. chief 500 (lake shore) was in the area and arrived on location and found 1 vehicle off the road with the patient self extricated. as ems crews were tending to patient care, the crew from engine 17 handled debris and scene lighting. crews found debris scattered about the crash scene. truck 12, truck 11 and fire police handled scene safety and traffic. reports from the scene stated that 2 vehicles were racing on the straight away on west ridge road when the crash occurred. millcreek township fire police are investigating. view additional pictures rush hour vehicle accident at west 26th & colonial thursday, july 17th - at 5:12pm, west ridge along with emergycare was dispatched to west 26th and colonial in the first due for a vehicle accident. 44 safety 1 arrived on location and reported 2 vehicles with moderate damage. safety also stated that the passenger door on the black vehicle would need to be popped. engine 17 arrived on location and the crew pulled the phoenix rescue tool and went to work. while that was happening, tower 10 arrived on scene and pulled a safety line. engine 17 had the door popped quickly and turned over patient care to emergycare. the patient was transported to an erie hospital for treatment. meanwhile during the incident, truck 11 and truck 12 along with the fire police established a safety zone and handled the busy rush hour traffic. crews cleared the scene at 6pm. chief 460 had command. view additional pictures tower 10 takes trip to the cherry fest saturday, july 12th - except for dodging some raindrops for about 30 minutes, the annual cherry fest parade went on as scheduled. tower 10 made the trip to north east, pa for the annual parade. tower 10 won the 1st place trophy for best appearing aerial apparatus. the parade, known as the largest firemen's parade in pennsylvania, is part of the annual cherry fest. the cherry fest is a huge fundraiser for the 2 fire departments that protect north east township and borough, the fuller hose and crescent hose fire departments. after participating in the parade, the crew from tower 10 traveled over to the carnival grounds to grab some sausage sandwiches, fries and some cool drinks from the nefd food tents. fire departments from both pa and ny participated in this year's parade. pictures courtesy of fellow photographer trish from wattsburg fd. thanks trish!! metro transit bus hits tree head on thursday, july 10th - during the 5pm hour, west ridge along with millcreek paramedics were dispatched to west 32nd and legion for a vehicle accident involving a metro transit bus. crews arrived on location and found said bus in the backyard of a nearby house head on into a tree. with numerous patients being injured, additional ambulances were requested along with the on duty mps supervisor. engine 17 arrived on location, established command and assisted ems crews with patient care. engine 16 arrived at the same time of engine 17 and assisted with patient care as well. meanwhile, fire police shut down west 32nd street from legion to priscilla drive. a total of 5 patients were transported by millcreek paramedics and lake shore fd squad 52 to local hospitals for treatment. millcreek township police are investigating how the bus ended up in the backyard. crews cleared the scene around 7pm. view additional pictures rush hour motor vehicle accident on sterrettania road monday, july 7th - shortly after 5pm as a car was waiting to pull into a local funeral home, the car was rear ended by a black truck heading northbound on sterrettania road. the car did sustain moderate to heavy damage while the truck only sustained minor damage. squad 52 along with west county paramedics responded to the scene due to mps already committed on other ems calls. fire police handled traffic and crews cleared the scene around 6:30pm. multi vehicle accidents ties up west 26th street for hours monday, july 7th - at 2:02pm, west ridge and millcreek paramedics were dispatched to the 2500 block of west 26th street for a vehicle accident. first initial reports indicated 3 vehicles with rollover and 1 of the vehicles to be a tanker truck. when companies arrived on location, they found 3 vehicles with moderate to heavy damage. with multiple patients, additional ambulances were requested to the scene. when engine 17 arrived on location, the crew pulled a safety line. the tanker was carrying around 700 gallons of diesel fuel. after the patients were transported to the trauma center, fire crews remained on scene assisting millcreek township police. fire police shut down west 26th street eastbound for several hours. crews cleared the scene around 4:50pm. chief 460 had command. view additional pictures west ridge participates in annual july 4th parades friday, july 4th - every year, west ridge fd participates in the annual millcreek township and lawrence park july 4th parades. this year was no different. the day began as members met at bob evans for breakfast. afterwards, wrfd headed down to the millcreek township parade. this year's parade featured around 110 units. riding in the bucket of tower 10 during the parade was santa claus. santa was even seen wearing a firefighting helmet. later in the afternoon, tower 10 along with engine 19 traveled over to lawrence park for their annual parade. once the millcreek township fire companies got lined up to enter the parade route, the battle of the sirens began. the battle of the sirens is a tradition at the lawrence park parade where all of the millcreek fire companies hit their lights and activate their sirens all at the same time. another plus was that the weather couldn't have been any nicer. photos courtesy of denny hickin. crews train in rapid intervention team operations monday, june 30th - for the past 2 drill nights, crews have been training in rit operations. rit stands for rapid intervention team or fast team. on june 23rd, the instructors went over the fundamentals and purpose of the rit and the tools that are used. afterwards, members had the chance to perform a victim drag and how to do a scba air change over. on june 30th, members met at some of the available training houses that were made available by erie airport. there, with the facemasks covered with glad seal & peel, crews entered the houses to perform 1 of 4 tasks. the tasks were to located a victim on the division 2 and do a scba air change over, how to initiate a mayday, follow a hose line and maneuver through a hole in the wall while wearing a scba and work on accountability. in all, the training went well. special thanks to donny erbin, jr and joe petrone from kuhl hose as well as the instructors from edinboro fd for instructing wrfd in rit. view additional pictures new cool local fire website monday, june 30th - a new cool local fire department website has been launched. this website has information about the fire departments that serve erie city/county. the address is www.eriepafire.com. it is an excellent resource. west ridge and mutual aid companies handle high rise investigation and evacuation tuesday, june 24th - around 11:30pm, west ridge was dispatched to a local residential high rise for a reported transformer fire. after the first arriving crews did an investigation and chief 463 receiving numerous reports of what was going on, the first alarm assignment was struck bringing lake shore, west lake and millcreek paramedics service. tower 10 arrived on location on the route 20 side of the structure and put their aerial into service. crews from numerous companies did a basement to roof search of the 9 story structure. crews did report a haze in the basement and on several floors. as a result, the structure was evacuated and ems command was established by chief 500 and mps. with numerous crews working inside and ems command being established, chief 463 requested an additional ambulance and rescue 539 along with fire police from fairview fd. when 539 arrived on location, they reported to manpower staging on the northwest side of the building. after further investigating, crews found that the wiring in the fire pump panel was burned up. this is what was causing the haze in the building. during this time, several residences were unable to completely evacuate the structure. as a result, crews stayed with of them until the situation was under control. it was around 2:30am when companies began to clear. companies operating were tower 10, engine 17, engine 16, engine 55, truck 2, rescue 539, truck 529, squad 538, mp 14, mp 24, and mp 28. engine 16 refurb update thursday, june 19th - today, the engine 16 refurb committee made a trip to see how engine 16 was coming along. the refurbishment of engine 16 is progressing nicely. the body doors have been repainted and the front of the truck is currently getting stripped down to prepare for sand blasting and paint. the rear compartment is completely framed in and is awaiting the roll up door when it is finished with paint. additional holes have been cut for the new scene lights and warning lights. all of the new warning lights and the will-burt light tower are in and waiting to be installed. we should hopefully see it back sometime in august. here is a rundown of what is being done: (1) move generator to hose bed similar to e-17 (2) enclose rear of unit, including moving rear wall closer to tank (3) install new whelen led warning light package (4) install new havis-shields kwik-strike 4000 hid scene lighting (5) install new 5400 watt, 6 head, 15 ft tall will-burt light tower with overhead warning system and (6) repaint the whole rig, including updating graphics package to new wrfd standard. engine 16 is scheduled to return to west ridge around the middle of august. member recently upgrades rope rescue training sunday, june 15th - during the month of july, firefighter rob hornaman spent time at fairview fire department enrolled in 2 rope rescue classes. the first class was basic ropes rigging. in this class, those in attendance learned out to setup basic rigging systems including the 3:1, 4:1, anchor systems, and hauling systems. the other class attended was a ropes 2 class. this class took place at fairview fd, erie county public safety training grounds and at the snake pit area in north east township. while at the snake pit, firefighters had to rappel from 88 feet down. firefighters also learned how to do pick offs, ascend and descend. special thanks to jim wagner and bob barberini and their assistants for teaching both classes. daytime crews handle vehicle accident thursday, june 5th - today, crews were dispatched to the 4000 block of zuck road for a vehicle accident. crews arrived on location and reported 3 vehicles with moderate damage. while ems crews from millcreek paramedic service & emergycare were tending to patient care, engine 17 handled fluids and debris while fire police directed traffic. multiple patients were transported to the hospital for treatment. millcreek township police are investigating. crews train on rescue tool equipment monday, june 2nd - this evening, crews traveled out to denny's wrecking on thomas road to train on the various rescue tools. the tools trained on were the phoenix and hurst rescue tools, various hand tools and the rescue 42 jacks. those in attendance had the chance to setup the rescue jacks and to use the various tools available. this is an annual training session that is held at denny's wrecking. special thanks to denny's wrecking for providing us some vehicles to train on. view additional pictures small trash fire quickly extinguished monday, may 26th - this afternoon, crews were dispatched to a trash fire underneath the peninsula ave bridge. lt-17 arrived on location and reported a small trash fire and that 1 engine could handle. engine 17, with a full crew of 7, arrived on location, pulled the trash line and had the fire extinguished within moments. crews cleared the scene within 30 minutes. on the nozzle is probationary firefighter josh carson. engine 17 handles dumpster fire while volunteers refresh on ropes training sunday, may 25th - as volunteers were doing a ropes refresher at the firehouse, the alarm was sounded for a dumpster fire in the area of west 21st and fillmore in the first due. engine 17 immediately went responding with a crew of 6. engine 17 arrived on location and found a dumpster filled with trash with minor fire showing. crews pulled an attack line and had the fire knocked down very quickly. as crews were cleaning up from this, a fire alarm was dispatched also in the first due, but it turned out to be false on a count of careless cooking. vehicle accident route 20 & millfair friday, may 23rd - at 6:38pm this evening, west ridge along with millcreek paramedics were dispatched to route 20 and millfair for a vehicle accident. chief 463 arrived on location and reported 2 vehicles with moderate damage. engine 17 arrived on location and handled fluids and debris. meanwhile, mps along with squad 52 (lake shore - special called) handled patient care. truck 11 and fire police handled traffic and scene safety. crews cleared the scene at 7:10pm. chief 463 had command. west 38th & amherst vehicle accident wednesday, may 7th -
