tolland fire department inc., tolland, connecticut, usa fire danger intolland, connecticut low as ofmonday, december 01, 2008 welcome throughout 2008 the department has been celebrating 75 years of service to the town of tolland and its neighboring communities in north-eastern connecticut. the celebration of this milestone concluded with the department's annual open house on october 11, 2008. on public display for the first time was a new all-terrain vehicle which the volunteers of the tolland fire department, inc. have purchased and equipped to assist residents in a variety of fire, medical and search and rescue situations. the polaris 'ranger' atv delivers power to all 6 of its wheels, and it is capable of negotiating walking trails, crossing fields, and maneuvering through light brush where normal emergency vehicles cannot go. the funds for the purchase of this vehicle came from money which the volunteers have saved over several years from donations and various fund-raising activities. no tax dollars were used for the purchase. a custom built 'skid unit' has also been purchased by the volunteers. it has been mounted on the rear of the vehicle. this unit includes a water tank, pump and hose reel to permit the extinguishment of brush and grass fires. the skid unit also has a special frame so that an injured person may be transported on it when necessary. emergency lights and a radio are carried as well. the vehicle can be towed to the area of an emergency on a special trailer. in search and rescue operations the vehicle can be used as a mobile command post. last year the men and women who volunteer as members of the department provided fire, rescue and emergency medical services to help safeguard more than 14,600 residents who reside in the town's 40 square mile area. the department responded to more than 1400 calls for emergency assistance< due to fires, accidents, illness and weather-related damage. for more than 75 years the town of tolland has been able to rely upon the dedication of such men and women - "neighbors helping neighbors" - as members of the tolland fire department, inc. bookmark us • &n • &nbs e-mail copryright© 2008 all rights reserved. updated december 2, 2008 website design & management byrdn associates, llc
