storm engine company, derby, ct home | archives | history | members | apparatus | guestbook | events/training | gallery | store | links 2008 2007 2006 run stats fire ems total 454 1733 the storm engine co. is one of 4 fire companies within the city of derby. the storm ambulance & rescue corp is the only ems and rescue provider in the city. although two separate organizations, we operate mostly as one unit. we protect an area of 5.5 square miles with a population of approx. 13,000 people. derby is located about 10 miles outside of new haven. together we operate 2 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 2 ambulances, 2 hazmat units, and 2 marine units. we respond to around 1500 emergencies annually. storm engine photo of the day for members after a house fire on pine st. at approx. 1050 hrs eng. 11, rescue 18, fd-9 and eng.13 were dispatched to derby neck rd for a reported mva with injuries. they found a one car crash with the vehicle sliding off the slippery ice coated road and hitting a series of trees. the driver was injured and taken to yale nh trauma center. units worked the scene for approx. 45 mins.     storms ball a success saturday, november 29, 2008 - approx. 150 people attended the 158th annual fireman's ball. the event was held at the villa bianca in seymour. a buffet dinner was served and dancing and an open bar followed until midnight.   ryan hart & heather domurad   engine company and storm ambulance corp officers first due attic fire thursday, november 20, 2008 - at approx. 06:45 hrs, box 62 was struck for a reported attic fire at 26 7th street. dispatched were engines 11, 12, 16, truck 15, rescue 18 and fd9. engine 12 arrived first and layed a supply line from hawthorne ave @ 7th st. a 1 3/4" handline was stretched inside and the fire was quickly knocked down using one handline. the last unit cleared the scene after about an hour and a half.     by scott foster morning building fire and power problem saturday, november 15, 2008 - at approx 06:30 box 17 was struck for a structure fire at 47 minerva st. engines 11, 12, 16, truck 15 and rescue 18 were dispatched. engine 11 arrived first and reported heavy fire to the rear of a 2 1/2 woodframe. the fire was actually in a plumbing building located to the rear of the 2 1/2 wood. fire was showing through the roof and causing an exposure problem. members of engine 11 stretched a line, forced entry and began knocking down the fire. all companies were put to work stretching additional lines, performing ventilation and checking for extension in the exposure. it was noticed that the power would not turn off inside the building after the fire was knocked down. a business owner from across the street stated something was wrong in his building as well. companies found a small fire in the basement of that building and soon it was realized a serious power problem was taking place in the area. power was soon shut down to all of downtown derby. engine 12 was requested by the power company to standbye for most of the day while the problem was taken care of.     one taken to hospital after derby ave. crash saturday, november 8, 2008 - at approx. 1500 hrs firefighters from the paugessett hook & ladder co. #4 called fire comm. to report an mva in front of their hq. they requested a full motor vehicle response which brought engine 13, rescue 18, fd-9 to the scene. they found a 2 car mva. one party the driver of the pickup truck refused treatment and transport stating he was not injured. the person in the other vehicle needed assistance to get out of the vehicle. firefighters and emt’s removed the person and fd-9 transported the patient to griffin hospital. units worked the scene approx. 45 mins.     another car off exit 16 thursday, november 6, 2008 - it what is becoming a regular occurance, another car attempting to enter route 8 south @ exit 16 slid off the road. engines 11, 16, rescue 18 and fd 9 were dispatched for a mva with a car off the road, down an embankment. the driver of the vehicle was able to self extricate and climb up the hill. he was transported to bridgeport hospital by fd9.     mva prompts search for driver sunday, november 2, 2008 - engine13, eng 16, fd-9, rescue 18 were dispatched to new haven ave near the crystal cleaners for a 1 vehicle mva. the vehicle struck a utility pole destroying the vehicle. the operator ran from the scene prompting a search with canines from derby & shelton. police are investigating the accident. while at the accident a second alarm was recieved for smoke in the building at the kentucky fried chicken restaurant on pershine drive. units responded and found smoke from an oven set off an automatic alarm. units worked both scenes for approx. 1 hour.     storms thank senator crisco thursday, october 30, 2008 - storm ambulance recently placed a new first responder vehicle in service. the vehicle a 2008 chevrolet silverado extended cab pickup truck replaced a 1995 suburban that had almost 250,000 miles. the vehicle will have three primary purposes, the first as a response vehicle for members to go to the scene of a medical or other emergency to meet a responding ambulance and begin early patient care, a transport vehicle for k-9 kevin who is a regional resource and for the valley division of the nhash team to transport personnel and equipment. the vehicle was obtained with a grant from the state of ct. senator joe crisco worked with the ambulance corps to deliver the $25,000.00 grant and make the replacement possible. members of storm engine company ambulance would like to thank senator crisco and his staff for their support.   ambulance officers and senator cris   fatal mva saturday, october 25, 2008 - at about 4:00 am on saturday morning engines 13, 16 rescue 18 and fd9 were dispatched to new haven ave near bank st. for a mva. fd2 (chief butler) arrived and reported a car into a telephone pole and one occupant requiring extrication. extrication was started and after it was determined it would be a very difficult extrication, the victim was pronounced doa. units remained on scene for several hours to assist the pd with the investigation and to remove the victim. fire prevention wednesday, october 22, 2008 - several times over the past couple of weeks, children from the local schools and day cares have been visiting the firehouse for some fire prevention lessons. the children have been taught about dialing 911 in an emergency, not to play with matches or fire, the importance of smoke detectors and having an escape plan in case of fire. the kids also get to see the fire engines and see a firefighter dressed in all their gear. this program takes place every year around fire prevention week. a little history tuesday, october 21, 2008 - it\'s been quite lately, so here is some history from 1958 about the derby fire department, thanks to our friends at the valley historical society. january 10th - bf goodrich donates $250 to the storm ambulance to purchase a portable incubator january 18th - operation valley takes place. 1000 volunteers take part in a regional civil defense excersice. the state civil defense director calls it the biggest in state history. exercises take place all over the valley. in derby, smoke bombs are set off at irving school and rescues are made by derby, ansonia, shelton, oxford and woodbridge fds. boy scouts provide first aid to the injured. as that is going on, an old model a ford is set on fire on main st. january 20th - night ice skating is taking place at charlie\'s pond. the fd provides lighting. april 9th - a small one room guest cottage is destroyed by fire just north of mcconney flats on roosevelt drive may 19th - the railroad viaduct over the road to island park (lower caroline street) catches fire giving off thick clouds of smoke. the fire department extinguishes the blaze before the viaduct is destroyed. rail traffic resumes 15 minutes after the fire is put out. june 21 - a gas leak causes an explosion in a 6 family house at 92 1/2 olivia street after a man changes a light fixture and causes a spark. the man is seriously burned. there are no other injuries and there is no fire. july 9th - a call of a boat floundering near indian wells state park on the housatonic river causes the storm engine company and the yale university boat house to launch their rescue boats at about 10:30 pm. the derby, shelton and seymour pds scour the shoreline and nothing is found. july 12 - a 72 year old man dies when hit by a car at the intersection of derby ave @ gilbert st. he is the first auto fatality in derby in 18 months. august 9th - a high pressure water main breaks on high st. wrecking a pump station and leaving sentinel hill without water for 12 hours. the fd relays water for 20 hours straight to keep the holding tanks at the top of sentinel hill full. october 13th - the little red shoe store at 288 roosevelt dr. is gutted by a fire in the main office and storage area. the fire is extinguished quickly, but the store sustains high losses due to ruined inventory. stay tuned for more history. home depot fire safety day saturday, october 4, 2008 - members of the derby fd and storm ambulance & rescue corps participated in the annual home depot fire safety day. members of the ambulance corps performed an extrication demonstration. members of the derby fd displayed their equipment. home depot staff provided snacks and wood building projects for children, including a build and paint your own fire engine project. rescue dog kevin also attended the event and was a hit with the children. the event was attended by approx. 200 people.     route 8 roll over friday, september 26, 2008 - fd-9, engine 11, 13, rescue 18 were dispatched to route 8 near the southbound entrance ramp from pershing drive for a one vehicle roll over down an embankment. both occupants of the vehicle were out of the care and up the bank upon arrival. both were transported to griffin hospital. units worked the scene for approx. 1 hour     pump training thursday, september 25, 2008 - members took part in weekly training on thursday night. the topic was apparatus operation. both engines 11 and 12 went to the derby train station and ran through some scenarios for pump operators.     hot dog truck gets unexpected drive thru customer wednesday, august 20, 2008 -
