south marengo fire and rescue squad please activate javascript to view the newsticker. our deparment suffered the loss of a long time member and former emt, mrs. earlene norris this month may 2008. earlene was one of our first female members in our ladies aux in the mid 1970's and was invaluable to our department for 30+ years. several years ago earlene and her late husband, chester, were made lifetime members because of the thousands of dollars they had help us raise for our department from singings, fish frys, thrift shop sales, etc. sm14 was her call number and she will be truely missed.our next fish fry fund raiser will be november 1, 2008we would like to each and every one of you on sat. november1, 2008 at our semiannual fish fry fundraiser. it will be at our coxheath station as usual. your donations and support keep our department operating. .grilled turkey cooking was a huge success we would like to thank all the community members who came out to support our department in march of this year for our first turkey cook. our profits for exceeded our expectations with us selling over 250 turkeys. thank you for you support with our efforts to raise money to fund our organization. the profits made from this fund raiser will go a long way in helping us pay for our new station and our rescue truck. we are currently working to try to pay off these two debts and will then look forward in upgrading more of our equipment to have better and more reliable services for our community.pictured is department president travis harrington after a structure fire in nanafalia. fema grants and your donations allowed us to purchase the protective gear travis is wearing in this pic. 2008 assistance to firefighters grantour department has applied for another grant. we requested funding for over $36,000 in equipment and training in the department of homeland security's assistance to firefighters grant. awards will start sometime in late august. the first of december 2006 we learned that we have won $4,000 from georgia pacific. we applied for this grant a couple of months ago. this grant will allow us to purchase some new equipment to add to our fire fighting and rescue capabilities. plus, we are adding some safety features to our existing equipment. we were notified on sept 21, 2006 that we were had won a grant issued by the alabama fire marshall's office for $886.00 to purchase a new computer to enter our call data which is mandated by the department of homeland security. this computer will replace a computer we are using that is four years old. secondly, we have been notified that our department has won $1,000 in the hurricaine ivan recovery grant that is issued through the alabama forestry commission. this money is earmarked for supplies that will help us fight forest and grass fires.our new building is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can see pics of the building on our visitor's/equipment page. attention all members---- please check out our member's page for infomation.if you have an emergency please call 911. for business matters you can reach us at 334-994-4410. we are looking forward to hearing from you. you can also contact us at our e-mail address: webmaster@southmarengofr.o you are not familiar with our department and your first contact with us is online: we would be pleased to hear from you! please let us know what your questions are, we will be more than happy to help.our headquarters is in a community named coxheath which is near sweet water, alabama. we provide our community the the best fire protection, medical first response and basic rescue that we can give. we are totally volunteer with almost 55 members at this time. we are always looking for more members. see our member's page to see the date of our next meeting.we are always looking for new membership. we have a wide variety of needs when it comes to manpower. some of our members do not respond to emergency calls at all. they assist with fund raisers or maybe support or administrative jobs. some of our members prefer to respond to fires and can't handle the stress of medical calls. if you would join or just volunteer to help our department please feel free to contact us.
