how safe is your household? use this checklist to find out if you are taking the right steps to protect your family: count your smoke alarms be sure there is at least one smoke alarm installed on every level of your home, including one in every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area. change your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries it only takes a moment, but this simple habit is the best defense your family has against the devastating effects of a home fire or accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. the iafc and fire experts nationwide encourage people to change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries at least annually. an easy way to remember to do so is to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when you change your clocks back to standard time on november 2. check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors after inserting a fresh battery in each smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector, push the safety test button to make sure alarms are in proper working condition. never disconnect your smoke alarm battery! remember that a “chirping” alarm is a signal that it needs a fresh battery. clean your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors ensure your smoke alarms’ and carbon monoxide detectors’ sensitivity by cleaning them each month of dust and cobwebs. replace your smoke alarms install brand new smoke alarms every ten years. change your flashlight batteries keep flashlights with fresh batteries at your bedside for help in finding the way out and signaling for help in the event of a fire. install fire extinguishers install a fire extinguisher in or near your kitchen, and be sure that every family member knows how to use it. get the whole family involved once smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and have fresh batteries, you should also make sure family members — children in particular — know what the alarms and detectors sound like and what to do should the alarms ever sound. making a change change your clock change your battery ® , the national campaign championed by energizer® batteries and the international association of fire chiefs (iafc), is celebrating its 21st year and is now part of the new year-long family preparedness program keep safe. keep going®. the program helps save lives through home safety education and one simple, yet powerful message: change batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when turning clocks back in the fall.change your clock change your battery® program reaches hundreds of millions of americans each year, thanks to the help of more than 6,000 participating fire departments nationwide. ® november 2! “change your clock change your battery” program created by energizer and the international association of fire chiefs. energizer, energizer bunny design, your clock change your battery” marks are trademarks of energizer. ©2008 energizer “changeand other the change your clock change your battery change your clock change your battery® simple changes that could save your life november 2! october 5th -11th is fire prevention week! saturday october 4, 2008 - mayor gary l. graham is excited to announce that brent saunders has been selected as the city’s first full time fire chief. saunders has been a member of the o’fallon volunteer fire department for 25 years and has been the volunteer fire chief for the past four years. “given brent’s commitment to our community, his experience with the department and his excellent leadership skills, brent is a perfect fit for the new fire chief postion,” stated mayor graham. saunders has obtained numerous state firefighting certificates and has attended the national fire academy/emergency management institute as well as the university of illinois fire service institute and southwestern illinois college. he also serves as the president of the st. clair/monore county fire chief’s association and the statewide mutual aid box alarm system division 32. saunders is an executive board member of st. clair special emergency services and a fire science advisory board member of southwestern illinois college. he also serves at the haz mat/technical rescue liaison for st. clair special emergency services. the city’s hiring of a full time fire chief is a result of the comprehensive fire study completed last year by mcgrath consulting. the fire study concluded that the fire department was well-run and provided excellent services to o’fallon residents. however, the study articulated several administrative, financial, and legal areas that were not being addressed. as the city prepared an implementation plan for the study, it became obvious that a full time fire chief was needed. the best way to ensure the success of the volunteer fire department was to hire a full time chief to coordinate the volunteers. a national search was conducted for the fire chief position beginning with the running of advertisements in national, state and local publications. these advertisements produced 41 applications. city staff, in conjunction with dr. tim mcgrath from mcgrath consulting narrowed the pool of applicants to four finalists. the final four candidates participated in an assessment center conducted by mcgrath consulting. following the assessment center, city administrator walter denton made the recommendation to mayor graham that brent saunders be appointed to the fire chief position, and the city council has confirmed the appointment. “even though we had great final candidates, brent really excelled in every area. brent is very dedicated to the development of our volunteers and understands the important link of the fire department to all aspects of the community. brent shares a commitment to excellence and adapting fire services to fit an ever-changing and growing community. his commitment to this community, volunteer development and community interaction were an important part of his selection," stated city administrator walter denton. an assessment center is a day-long series of activities that simulate the types of roles that would be required for a fire chief. for example, the candidates had to make a presentation to a mock city council and had to prioritize a series of tasks, memos, and letters from an in-basket. the activities are a good indicator of character and management ability. saunders will begin his full time duties as the fire chief within the next 90 days. “i am very excited about being given the opportunity to be o’fallon’s first full time fire chief, and am looking forward to the challenges and rewards that a growing community like o’fallon presents,” stated brent saunders. estelle kampmeyer tiger cubs visit ofd   thursday april 10, 2008 - the o'fallon fire department will be offering their annual "keep the wreath red" program again this year. residents are asked to help "keep the wreath red" throughout the holiday season. this program, which emphasizes fire safety during the holiday season, provides a visual reminder of the community's success in preventing fires. the o'fallon fire department will place a large wreath lit with red bulbs in front of engine house #2 located at highway 50 and third street. if there are no holiday-related fires, the wreath will remain lit with only red bulbs. if a holiday-related fire occurs, one of the red bulbs will be replaced with a white bulb. by simply looking at the wreath, everyone will know how successful the community has been at being fire-safe. the fire department is anticipating another successful fire safe campaign again this year. the o'fallon fire department would like to point out the following fire safety reminders specific to the holiday season: 1. fireplaces: before starting your fire, be sure to remove all paper and wood decorations from the immediate area and ensure the flu is open. avoid prolonged over-firing. this may ignite the structure through overheated hearth or fireplace walls where the mortar has become dried and dropped out because of excessive heat. never use flammable liquids to light the fire, always keep the fire box area clean of ashes and embers and make sure they are completely cooled before taking the ashes or embers into a storage area. avoid burning garbage, dried decorations, wrapping paper, etc., in fireplaces as these burn with a very hot flame and may ignite accumulated creosote or cause damage to the chimney itself. it is also extremely important to have your chimney cleaned by a certified chimney sweep. 2. candles: the use of candles during the holiday season has increased drastically over the years. when using candles, always make sure that the candles are not close to combustible materials, such as curtains and other decorations. make sure all of the candles are snuffed out before retiring or leaving your house. 3. lights: christmas tree lights and other decorations set the theme for the holidays. here are some important points to remember when using them. use only lights that have been tested for safety. identify these by a label from a listing agency, such as ul. check the labels on lights to be used outdoors to see that they are suitable for outdoor use. never use indoor lights outside. fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, walls or other firm support to protect them from wind damage. never use more than the listed amount of light sets per extension cord. read the manufacturer's instructions carefully, and do not use more than the number of light sets recommended in one circuit. always turn off lights when you retire for the evening or leave your home. a short circuit in any electrical equipment could cause a fire. 4. trees: artificial trees (plastic) should bear a listing label. some unlabeled plastic trees burn with extreme intensity. do not rely on chemical coatings or sprays to make your live trees flame resistant. follow these safety rules when shopping for a natural tree: a fresh tree will stay green longer and be less of a fire hazard than a dry tree. to check for freshness, remember, check for color and scent. feel the needles; they shouldn't come off in your hand. a fresh tree is deep green in color and has a strong scent of pine. the trunk butt of a fresh tree should be sticky with sap. after you get the tree home, cut a half-inch off the trunk and keep plenty of water in the stand. place your christmas tree in a location away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. be sure that it is out of the traffic pattern and primary evacuation route in case of an emergency. if you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact the fire department at 624-4520. house fire on innsbruck lane in shiloh thursday, november 8, 2007 -
