welcome to nichols fire department   home archives apparatus links store information/history training/events recruitment guestbook fire prevention members area videos photo gallery officers members           founded in 1917, the nichols fire department is one of three 100% all volunteer departments in the town of trumbull, connecticut. operating out of two stations, we provide primary fire and rescue services to the nichols fire district along with assistance to the trumbull center and long hill fire departments. we also provide coverage to the surrounding communities and beyond. our apparatus includes 2 engines, 1 - 75 foot quint, 1 heavy rescue, 1 city service (lighting and air) truck, 3 chief's vehicles, and a utility truck. we are dedicated to serving the town of trumbull and will continue to do so for years to come. nichols fire department image of the day busy evening... thursday december 4, 2008 - this evening started at 1547 hours with nichols being dispatched to 999 silver lane, a large commercial medical office building, for the odor of gasoline.  apparently, the 911 caller exited the facility and smelled a strong odor of gasoline near a storm drain.  this building is adjacent to a gas station and this issue has occurred in the past, however, nichols car 1, car 2, and quint 303 still responded.  at 1554 hours, minutes after car 1 arrived and gave his size up of nothing showing, nichols was dispatched to 35 nutmeg drive for a commercial fire alarm.  car 2 had units responding to the odor complaint divert to the alarm.  rescue 300 and engine 301 added themselves to the nutmeg drive assignment.  after a size up, car 2 relayed his initial report of a burning odor and haze in the third floor computer room.  303 was the first fire apparatus on scene and thier crew reported directly to the computer room.  as the second due fire apparatus, 301 stood fast at the fire department connection while rescue 300 arrived third and laid into the engine.  after a brief investigation, interior units determined the odor and haze was caused by a burnt out computer server component. at 1648 hours, as units were picking up, nichols was dispatched as mutual aid to the long hill fire department to route 111 near trefoil drive for a motor vehicle accident, car smoking and possible extrication required. rescue 300 responded from their quarters with six firefighters and arrived second due. they found a two car motor vehicle accident; pick up truck versus school bus. the crew immediately got to work and assisted with removing the driver’s side door. due to the nature of this incident, multiple ambulances and fire apparatus were on scene for an extended period of time.   nichols fire department is picked to light the nia christmas tree wednesda december 3, 2008 - the nichols fire department was notified this afternoon by nia president fred palmieri that they have been picked as the honorary organization to "flip the switch" in turning on this years  nia christmas tree.  annually the nia  executive board has chosen an individual within the nichols district who has made monumental contributions to the village of nichols over the years.  this year, the board decided to change their protocol and felt that the nichols fire department deserved the special recognition.  the all volunteer department consists of 57 men and women who commit their lives to protecting the citizens in the village of nichols and town of trumbull.  the nichols fire department has been serving the residents of nichols since 1917.  the department will once again be involved in delivering santa claus from the north pole on their ladder truck so that he can meet all of the good girls and boys from the area.  the festivities kick off at 1700 hours at the methodist church.  all fire department members and their families are asked to assemble at the firehouse at 1645 hours in class a uniform (or some form of department apparel) in order to be recognized by the public during this event.  lets enjoy the moment and we look forward to seeing you there!   nia jingle bell run is this coming saturday december 6th saturday november 29, 2008 - an informational note to all members and anyone wishing to participate in the run.  the event kicks off at 0915 with the "firehouse run to the finish!"  this is a kids run that is approximately 1/3rd of a mile and starts at our own firestation on shelton road.  sign up for the kids run starts at 0800 in the apparatus bay.  the main event starts at 0930 at the point of the green.  a crew will be needed to help with setting up quint 303 to drape the flag over the roadway for the race participants.  traditionally shelton road gets shut down sometime around 0900 and is closed until the start of the main race at 0930.  anticipate the roads on the racecourse being affected untill approximately 1100 hours.  please be aware that traffic in the area will be very congested and alternate response routes to the station will be a necessity.  also, be advised that engines 301 and 302 will be out of service starting at 0800 hours due to the 2q practice sessions taking place at beaches pool.  station 2 members in the lake area may want to bring their gear home and respond to the pool to take engine 302 from the participants if the call is serious.  303 will be remaining at station 1 to put up the christmas lights and a vehicle from station 1 will be relocated to station 2 during the road race and light stringing.    anyone available to help with setup, please be at station 1 no later than 0730 hours and if possible, please put your name on the sign up sheet at station 1.   salvati army bell ring - december 20th at hawley lane mall saturday november 29, 2008 - on saturday, december 20th, members of the nichols fire department will be participating in their annual bell ring drive for the salvation army.  department members  would like to invite all residents to stop by and consider making a donation to those who are less fortunate during the holiday season.  the bell ring starts at 7:30 am and continues until 8:00 pm that evening.  stop by and say hi to your local volunteer firefighters!  as always, thank you for your support of our great organization!   turkey day turns out to be busy one! thursday november 27, 2008 - thanksgiving day started early for trumbull's volunteer fire departments.  the trumbull center fire department started the day around 0500 hours with a rollover on route 25.  next, it was nichols turn; the tones were transmitted at 0520 hours for the report of smoke in the computer room at the trumbull marriott.  units arriving found an odor in the room with a slight haze in the immediate area.  they investigated with thermal imaging cameras, checked hvac systems, along with the plenum area and could not find the source creating the problem.  a substantial investigation ensued with no root cause found.  during this event, at 0534 hours long hill was dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at saint joseph's manor.  with this structure being a high occupancy target hazard, units from all three companies responded and investigated the activation but found no smoke or fire.  at 0827 hours, the tones for all three departments dropped again, this time for the reported structure fire in trumbull centers district at 30 ash circle.  first arriving units found a light smoke condition which was later determined to be caused by food burning in the oven.  the assignment was reduced to trumbull center engine 101 and nichols quint 303 for ventilation.  things quieted down for the dinner hours until 2133 hours when nichols was dispatched to route 25 northbound prior to exit 9 for the reported motor vehicle accident with a fluid spill.  units responded and found a significant amount of various automobile fluids on the ground.  members applied speedy dry to the affected area.  the connecticut department of environmental protection was notified of the quantities spilled, and no response from them was necessary.  units returned to service and would finally get some rest during the remainder of their thanksgiving!   70th annual neighbors night is another success! tuesday, november 25, 2008 - the annual neighbors night celebration was held at station 1 starting at 1930 hours.  approximately 110-120 residents were in attendance and watched a presentation on the effects of fire and smoke.  the video presentation also stressed the importance of carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in each and every residence.  a short question answer period followed the presentation and then the annual turkey raffle was held.  all attendees received a turkey this year and a second raffle was held for some additional donations.  the nichols fire department would like to thank all of our attendees and a special thanks to our donators (raveis real estate-ken martin  and the "save nichols group") for their continued support!    mva closes huntington road tuesday, november 18, 2008 - nfd members were alerted to the report of a motor vehicle accident in the area of 2525 huntington road.  responding units were given additional information while in route, reporting a broken telephone pole with stratford fd and trumbull pd on scene.  nichols car 2 arrived on scene and reported one car into a telephone pole, with the pole snapped in half and the vehicle was unoccupied.  stratford fd units transferred command to nichols car 2 and reported that they had notified the ui company about the broken pole.  car 2 established huntington road command and had engine 301 block huntington road in the area of 2590 while quint 303 controlled traffic at hawley lane and huntington road.  members from both companies inspected the residential service lines of all the homes in the immediate area.  nfd units remained on scene until the ui disconnected power and family garage removed the vehicle from the pole.  the incident was then turned over to trumbull pd who remained on scene for traffic while the pole was replaced.            a note to all of our members! tuesday, november 11, 2008 - please take a look at the events/training area for upcoming events.  we are making every effort to post training, meetings and other information to help you stay abreast of activties within the organization.  please try to check our site every few days for apparatus, station, equipment or other operational updates.  for those of you unaware, rescue 300 is currently out of service having some upgrades done and also its annual pump testing.  the vehicle will be out of service for approximately 2 weeks.  engine 301 is the acting rescue and engine 302 has been moved to station 1 to provide coverage during the rescues absence.  stay safe!!!   refresher class at fairfield saturday, november 8, 2008 - today, members of the nichols fire department attended "back to basics" training at the fairfield fire school in fairfield, ct.  departments participating in this event spanned from manchester, ct to mount vernon, ny.  the topic explains the content of the classes perfectly, a review of the basics of firefighting including engine, ladder, and rescue company operations.  the ladder class refreshed the members knowledge of forcible entry, roof ventilation, and building searches.  the rescue class consisted of various extrication exercises, and the pumping class allowed firefighters to draft and practice other pumping techniques.   training like this is vital to keep refreshing firefighters memories on basic tactics.  practiced correctly, these essentials ensure safety and a a smooth fireground operation.   departm promotes 3 new lieutenants     tuesday, november 4, 2008 - at this months department business meeting, chief shawn rice announced to the general membership that he and appointing staff had chosen three existing members to be appointed to the position of lieutenant.  the three candidates were chosen from an original list of six members who met the criteria to be considered for the position.  evaluation forms were completed by existing lieutenants and captains and were submitted to the chief.  the chief then reviewed the evaluations with the assistant and deputy chief in order to come up with the final list.  upon completion of the final ranking, each of the top three candidates were interviewed by the chief to see if they were interested in taking the position.  all three candidates accepted.  the members promoted to lieutenant are (from left to right) curt robinson, bill o'keefe and tom newbold.  car assignments will be made in the very near future.  please congratulate them when you see them and we all wish them good luck!   busy day ends with significant entrapment tuesday, november 4, 2008 - just after 0700, the day started early for members of trumbull's 3 fire districts with the report of a possible structure fire at 2991 nichols avenue.  first arriving apparatus were surprised to find stratford fire department units already operating at the incident scene.  the original 911 call was via cell phone and the caller was directed to stratford police dispatch.  in turn, stratford alerted their companies to nichols avenue in stratford, not knowing the fire was actually in trumbull.  responding stratford units continued in to trumbull and found a fire on the side of a porch.  soon later, trumbull units were notified and responded.  nichols units remained on scene to assist the fire marshals office with the investigation. *at 0713 hours, trdc transmitted the alarm for nichols to respond to a motor vehicle accident with fluid spill on route 15 southbound in the area of exit 50, white plains road.  units responded to the location and applied speedy dry to the affected area. *at 0720 trdc dispatched all 3 trumbull departments to 720 daniels farm road, tlc fun zone for the activated fire alarm.  once again, units responded and investigated the cause.  no smoke or fire was found and units were placed in service. *0936, once again all three trumbull fire departments were dispatched to 33 west lake road, the pinewood lake clubhouse for the reported automatic fire alarm.  upon arrival, units reported nothing showing and made an exterior survey of the structure while awaiting the key holder.  once entry was gained, members found an activated beam detector in the ballroom.  units were returned to service. *1556 the tones were transmitted for the report of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment on route 8 southbound in the area of exit 10.  nichols car 2 was first on scene and reported a 2 car motor vehicle accident with one victim heavily entrapped.  route 8 command was established by car 2 and the scene was divided in to the the high speed lane and breakdown lane for on scene operation identification.  upon fur of the high speed lane occupant, it was found that this person was also entrapped and would need to be extricated.  nichols car 1 was assigned operations of the car located in the high speed lane while command oversaw operations of the vehicle in the breakdown lane.  members from nichols, trumbull center and long hill fire departments worked together in both entrapments.  extrication of both occupants took less than 30 minutes and companies remained on scene for another 90 minutes assisting connecticut state police with illumination for their investigation.   auto alarm and mva sunday, november 2, 2008 - members were woken this morning by the activated alarm ringing in from 1235 huntington turnpike, huntington turnpike senior housing building.  upon arrival car 2 established command and reported a sprinkler flow activation of the attic dry system.  first arriving engine 301's crew reported to the lobby for directions and proceeded to floor 4 with trumbull car 3 to investigate.  301's chauffer in the meantime hooked into the standpipe sprinkler connection.  2nd due quint 303 reported to side a of the structure and set up to operate while their additional members assisted with the interior investigation.  units found the attic area to be clear of any sprinkler activation, but upon further inspection of the sprinkler room, found the dry system in the attic was charged due to a malfunction of the dry valve.  the system was shut down, drained and the fire marshals office notified along with the sprinkler company.  trumbull center tower 104 which was in staging was returned and companies operating on scene broke down.  the scene was handed over to the building representative and fire marshals office.  a few hours later, members were again dispatched to the report of a motor vehicle accident in the area of st. josephs high school.  upon arrival of nichols car 2, he reported a 2 car motor vehicle accident with fluids on the ground and 1 person still in one of the vehicles.  quint 303 arrived on scene and members applied speedy dry to the spill while other members disconnected power to both vehicles and established traffic flow safety areas.  trumbull ems was requested to check out one of the occupants involved in the crash while rescue 300 reported to huntington turnpike and macdonald road to close the road completely.  members were on scene for approximately 1hour and waited for the arrival of multiple wreckers to remove the damaged vehicles.    open house 2008 sunday, october 12, 2008 -  today, the nichols fire department held their annual open house.  this event gives the community an opportunity to see what the organization is all about, to tour the firehouse, meet members, and view several demonstrations.  on display was an ambulance from trumbull emergency medical services and a home safety trailer from the westport fire department. american red cross volunteers brought a service truck, as well as information about their organization. connecticut child identification program volunteers donated their services during as well. in addition, a tent was set up with a high powered fog machine inside. this exhibit gave people an idea of what it is like to navigate through a smoke filled room.     throughout the day, firefighters demonstrated techniques on safe cooking and showed how stove fires start.  they also showed various techniques on how to safely extinguish stove fires.  in another demonstration, firefighters lit a small pre-constructed mock room on fire.  this exhibit was used to show the public how quickly a fire can progress through a room.  also, firefighters performed a mock extrication and car fire.                two calls on rt 8 within 15 minutes     friday, july 18, 2008 - at approximately 1541 hours trumbull center and nichols were dispatched to the reported car fire on route 8 northbound just after the penny avenue (exit 8 ) off ramp.  while in route, nichols rescue 300 traveling southbound reported to trumbull fire control that they were confirming a vehicle in the northbound lane “going good”.  nichols car 2 was first to arrive on scene with state pd and reported a vehicle with the engine and passenger compartment heavily involved.  rescue 300 arrived and began suppression activities while trumbull center engine 101 provided scene traffic control and assisted with the overhaul.  trumbull cars 3 and 4 also responded to the incident and assisted with operations.        while members were picking up from the car fire, nichols was dispatched to another alarm on “route 8 northbound for the report of a box truck leaking diesel fuel”.  trumbull center car 3 cleared the initial alarm and took in the reported spill with trumbull center engine 101.  while in route trumbull fire control received additional information stating that the spill may be from a punctured saddle tank on the vehicle.  nichols engine 301 and quint 303 also responded on this alarm with 301 committing to the scene and 303 staging at the entrance ramp.  upon arrival, trumbull car 3 reported a large continuous spill in the breakdown lane with a puddle located under the vehicle.  fd personnel applied speedy dry to the affected area immediately around the vehicle and the state of ct dep was notified of the situation.  units from both calls cleared shorty after.     nfd holds public education class and runs mva thursday july 17, 2008 -
