members of the mesilla fire department took part in remembrance day ceremonies at the roundhouse in santa fe along with other firefighters(ff) from around new mexico. the day coincides with patriot day and not only honors those who died in the terrorist attacks of september 11, 2001 but also honors all firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty. ff ricardo munoz, james padilla and paul ford took part in the ceremonies. brush 31 took part in the procession of apparatus. ff ford was given the honor of laying the new mexico state flag representing new mexico firefighters who have given their all atop 343 roses representing the fdny firefighters who gave their lives at ground zero. firefighters attend 52nd annual nm firefighters training academy - firefighters james padilla, john casal, paul ford, samantha brawley and fire chief kevin hoban attended the 52nd annual new mexico firefighters training academy held in socorro, nm. the training academy offered a variety of courses ranging from vehicle extrication, flammable liquids and structural firefighting. the firefighters attended the flammables and combustible liquid emergencies course. this course is the first of ten courses required to obtain the international fire service accreditation congress (ifsac) firefighter ii certification. the firefighters spent a total of five days at the training academy and during that time took first place in the firefighters water polo challenge. more photos fire safety house demonstrations a big hit, 5-2-07 - it was a busy afternoon as mesilla elementary school hosted their annual health fair on the school grounds. nearly 350 students along with teachers and sponsors participated in displays and booths from various local agencies including the us border patrol, american red cross, and southwest ambulance to name just a few. the mesilla fire department's safety house was a big hit as members put on safety demonstrations of what to do should fire occur in a home. the static displays of engine 3101 and various equipment was also a crowd pleaser. mesilla fire department spends a day with the easter bunny, 4-6-07 - the easter bunny made a big entrance aboard engine 3101 at the plaza to the delight of students from mesilla elementary school. an easter egg hunt was held soon after mr. bunny's arrival and the air was filled with laughter and joyful screaming as a mad scramble to collect eggs from the hundreds that colored the plaza. then everyone settled down to snacks and punch served up by the parent/teacher organization. motorcycle accident on calle del norte, 4-9-07 - units from mesilla and south valley fire department responded to a motorcycle accident at calle del norte and the rio grande river bridge. due to the mechanism of injury, southwest medevac was placed on standby. upon arrival a motorcyclist was found next to his motorcycle after having lost control due to gravel, while negotiating the curve from n fairacres rd to calle del norte. it appeared that a telephone pole cable on the side of the road assisted in stopping the bike preventing both the driver and motorcycle from potentially ending up in the river. the driver, who was alone on the bike, was treated on scene and transported non-emergency to memorial medical center by southwest ambulance ap6. brush fire 1380 snow rd, 3-19-07 - mesilla fire units responded to a brush fire at 1380 snow rd. the call was reported to be threatening vehicles on the property. the fire was spread over two acres and moving in three directions fanned by 10 to 20 mph winds. additional mfd units were requested as well as a tanker 1201 from neighboring fairacres fire department. the fire was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes. cleanup consisting of the use of hand tools and water continued for another hour. burned material consisted of brush and vegetation only. no property loss was attributed to the fire and the cause remains under investigation. click here to view photos new fire chief appointed, 3-12-07 - chaplian kevin hoban has been appointed as the new fire chief at the mesilla fire department. former chief chad zecha is moving back to arizona for family and personal reasons. he will be appointed as a captain with rural metro fire department in phoenix, arizona. kevin has resigned from his current positions at mountain view medical center and has been begun working full time as the new fire chief. he is very excited about his new position and hopes that he can implement new changes that will only improve upon the foundation that chief zecha has laid down for him. the members of the mesilla fire department would like to thank chief zecha for his 13 years of honorable commitment, dedication and perseverance. cadets graduate from the mesilla fire academy, 3-4-07, seven cadets graduated from the mesilla fire academy to begin work as probationary firefighters for the town of mesilla. the fire academy consisted of 20 weeks of focusing primarily on firefighter i training. physical fitness was held every monday wednesday and friday morning at 5:30am until 7:30am. the workout consisted of various exercises lead by instructors john casal and edward vasquez. classes were held every monday night from 6:00pm to 10pm by various instructors. the classes consisted of basics of firefighter i, hazmat awareness, wildland and basic first aid. all cadets successfully completed the necessary training to begin their work and probationary members. the mesilla fire department would like to thank them for their hard work as well as the instructors that contributed to their success. you are visitor # to our site! best viewed with internet explorer/mozilla firefoxmesillafire.com is the official website of the mesilla fire dept.copyright 2007 mesilla fire dept. all rights reserved.
