nichuck engineer chris snook santa visits martinsville monday, december 24, 2007 – on christmas eve, while the reindeer were taking a break, santa requested the martinsville fire department to assist him on visiting all the good boys and girls in martinsville. santa began his journey through martinsville at 1700 hours and didn’t get finished until after 2200 hours! he spent time riding on engines 43-101, 43-102, 43-103, 43-145, brush truck 43-141, and special services truck 43-151. needless to say, santa had a great time on his tour visiting all the residents of fire district 1 and giving out candy canes. santa is already planning his return trip for next year! green brook structure fire saturday, december 8, 2007 – at approximately 0237 hours on saturday morning, the mvfd was dispatched mutual aid into warren township for one engine to standby at the mount bethel firehouse and for one engine to be placed on standby in quarters while units operated at a structure fire in green brook. engine 43-101 took the move-up assignment at the mount bethel firehouse and engine 43-103 remained with a full staffing in quarters in district 1. after standing by at the mount bethel firehouse, engine 43-101 was requested to move up to the scene and engine 43-103 moved up to mvfd station 1 and stood by. 43-101's crew assisted units on scene with cleanup and dismantling of the scene and breakdown of hoselines and equipment. all mvfd units were clear from the scene by 0630 hours. bail-out training saturday, december 1, 2007 – on saturday, members of the mvfd gathered at 0700 hours to participate in a drill to place a new bail-out system in service for all interior structurally qualified firefighters. the drill consisted of an early-morning classroom portion to familiarize members with the system and a hands-on training session at the burn tower in somerville. the hands-on portion consisted of practicing various bail-out scenarios from windows in the tower. all participants in the drill were required to complete a minimum of 10 bail-outs. in all, the firefighters of the mvfd completed over 200 bail-outs saturday. all members agreed the drill was extremely beneficial to all in attendance. cover assignment in district 3 sunday, november 25, 2007 – on saturday, at approximately 1201 hours the mvfd was dispatched mutual aid to district 3 for a cover assignment while district 3 departments operated at a structure fire in branchburg. engine 43-102 responded to green knoll fire company station 1 and stood by. all mvfd units were clear from the cover assignment by 1400 hours. mva with overturn and hazmat spill monday, november 19, 2007 – at approximately 1245 hours on monday, the mvfd was dispatched to the area of chimney rock road at the s-curves for a reported overturned dump truck with injuries. first arriving units reported an overturned dump truck with approximately 10 to 15 gallons of diesel fuel in the roadway. engine 43-101 responded to the scene. the somerset county hazmat team was requested to respond to handle the fuel spill. additional units on scene included the bridgewater police department, the bound brook rescue squad, and the bradley gardens rescue squad. all units were clear by 1354 hours. live burn drill monday, november 12, 2007 – on monday, the mvfd participated in a live burn drill at the burn tower in somerville. firefighters in attendance refreshed in proper techniques of search and rescue, extinguishment, and ventilation in live fire situations. members in attendance participated in several burns and scenarios throughout the course of the drill. open house saturday, october 13, 2007 – on saturday, the mvfd hosted another successful open house with several hundred civilians in attendance. this year's open house incorporated several aspects of fire safety and fire prevention education for the public. demonstrations were given showing the donning of firefighters' gear and air packs. children in attendance were allowed to board the fire apparatus and were shown various tools and items carried onboard. the open house culminated with demonstrations of the proper use of fire extinguishers and a simulated vehicle extrication, with members dismantling a donated vehicle. all members agreed an educational and entertaining experience was had by all in attendance. fire prevention week(s) october 9 - october 24, 2007 – in keeping with the martinsville tradition, the mvfd again participated in a massive fire prevention effort this year. the 2+ week-long effort included thirteen separate visits to different schools and preschools within district 1 and groups visiting mvfd headquarters for fire safety talks and tours. all students left with an increased knowledge of fire safety and refreshers of the basics of stop, drop, and roll and "get out, stay out". annual inspection and work details saturday, october 6, 2007 – on saturday, the mvfd again participated in the annual inspection of apparatus and manpower of bridgewater township. the inspection was hosted this year by the green knoll fire company and was the culmination of a full week of work details to prepare engine 43-102. members worked hard to take apart and clean every item and detail the engine. all participating members are thanked for their assistance in another successful inspection. emergency services drill at brhs sunday, september 30, 2007 – at 0841 hours the mvfd was dispatched to participate in a bridgewater township-wide drill involving an active-shooter scenario at the bridgewater-raritan regional high school in district 3. mvfd crews assisted with several tasks throughout the course of the drill. the drill involved several different agencies from around the township including several rescue squads, fire departments, and law enforcement agencies. the mvfd maintained staffing for apparatus within district 1 throughout the course of the drill as well. all mvfd units cleared the drill by noon sunday. reported structure fire tuesday, september 4, 2007 – on tuesday at approximately 1740 hours the mvfd was dispatched to a residence on washington valley road for a possible structure fire. first arriving units reported a heavy smoke condition to the rear of the dwelling. upon further investigation, units discovered opened burning in a large fire pit to the rear of the structure. units on the scene included engines 43-101, 43-102, brush truck 43-141, and special services 43-151. 43-141 was used to extinguish the fire and all units cleared within 35 minutes. reported electrical fire friday, august 17, 2007 – at approximately 1810 hours on friday, the mvfd was dispatched to a residence on south brook road for a possible electrical fire and smoke condition in a dwelling. chiefs 43-10 and 43-11 responded with engines 43-101 and 43-102. first arriving units investigated locating a tree limb which had fallen removing power lines from the exterior of the structure. further investigation found negative signs of smoke or fire in the residence and any electrical equipment involved was secured. all units were clear from the scene within 45 minutes. somerset county 4-h fair wednesday, august 15, 2007 – on wednesday, the mvfd participated in the annual somerset county 4-h fair at the 4-h fair grounds in bridgewater. members showed off engine 43-145 and brush truck 43-141 and gave children a guided tour through a smoke-house teaching fire safety tips to anyone interested. all members in attendance agreed it was another successful year at the fair. members also distributed various fire safety pamphlets and mvfd memorabilia. rappelling drill monday, august 13, 2007 – monday, members of the mvfd participated in a rappelling drill off a local mountain climbing tower simulator in district 1. members were given the opportunity to rappel off the approximately 40-foot tower. everyone in attendance of the drill came away with a good refresher on rappelling and
