city of las cruces fire department | lcfd | las cruces, new mexico     home back your browser is not javascript enabled. you can select the menu map to locate any page in this web site city of las cruces - fire department enter websitequick links • home page • overview • administration • operations • prevention • special operations • recruitment • fire stations • resources • contact us   a vocation of service adolf zubia fire chief in 1907, a group of volunteers from our small southern new mexico town established the las cruces fire department (lcfd). the department evolved from an all-volunteer organization to a combination paid/volunteer organization in 1958, and then to a paid career department in 1964 when fire station #1 at 201 e. picacho ave. opened for business. as las cruces grew, the lcfd kept pace with the addition of six stations. staffing levels are currently at 129 sworn personnel who staff six engine companies and two truck companies, as well as five civilian support staff. strategic plan the city of las cruces recently adopted an overall five year strategic plan that addresses the rapid growth of our community. we are currently in the planning stages of the construction of a state of the art public safety training facility to be shared with the las cruces police department. other major proposals within the strategic plan include the addition of two new fire stations on the east and west sides of the city. special response teams in addition to fire suppression and emergency medical services, the lcfd also offers special response teams including technical rescue services, hazardous materials response and aircraft rescue and firefighting. emergency medical services in 2007, the lcfd responded to 13,431 calls for service, of which about 75% were related to emergency medical services. all of our firefighters are, at a minimum, licensed at the emt-basic level, although we are recognized by the state ems bureau as providing emt-intermediate level service. several of our engine companies are staffed with paramedics. community services the lcfd strives to be a community leader. in addition to providing fire and emergency services we also serve our community by providing the following: the vecino program ("vecino" is spanish for "neighbor") assists homebound persons by providing them with community contact via telephone. firefighters call our vecinos each morning for a short chat! blood pressure checks are free and available at each fire station. simply stop by and get your pressure checked! emergency medical and fire suppression services coverage for special events including the whole enchilada fiesta, fourth of july celebration, x-prize cup event, renaissance craft faire, and mesilla valley balloon rally to name a few. this assures fire department crews are nearby in the event any emergency need should arise. risk watch injury prevention program in partnership with the las cruces public schools, provides fire and life safety education to our elementary age school children. teachers work closely with public safety experts using the risk watch curriculum to provide important safety lessons in an effort to reduce the number of preventable injuries and deaths to children. lessons range from crossing the street to firearm safety. adopt-a-school program, again in partnership with the las cruces public schools, puts firefighters in the elementary schools to serve as role models and mentors to children. building plans review to ensure that all construction meets the latest building life safety and fire protection requirements, fire code enforcement, fire and arson investigation and public education. home and business fire safety inspections business inspections are scheduled on an annual basis, and home inspections are by request only. fire extinguisher training for businesses and citizens. © 2007 city of las cruces
