(national fire protection association) october 2, 2008 - the american red cross and the national fire protection association (nfpa) today released results of a survey showing the majority (79%) of americans are concerned about the rising cost of heating their homes, and many will use an alternative heating source to reduce their bills this winter. the survey identified additional behaviors related to appliance maintenance and cooking that could also present home fire hazards this winter. “as we head into, what by all accounts is likely to be a very costly heating season, these survey results and fire prevention week provide a critical opportunity for us to remind people about the things they can do to prevent home fires and keep their families safe and warm this winter,” said nfpa president james. m. shannon. “if people use alternative heat sources to reduce energy costs, it is critical they use devices that are new or in good working order, and they turn off units when they go to bed or leave the room.” “we hope this survey will encourage more people to take the simple steps necessary to protect their families and homes from fire,” said gail j. mcgovern, president and ceo of the american red cross. “of the more than 74,000 disasters the american red cross responds to each year, approximately 93% are fire-related, but unlike natural disasters, most home fires can be prevented.” ruling restores minimum staffing for airport rescue fire fighters (international association of fire fighters) october 1, 2008 - an arbitrator has ruled that the air force material command (afmc) headquartered at wright-patterson air force base in dayton, ohio, violated provisions of a labor agreement between the iaff and the command by reducing staffing last year. the arbitrator determined that the command did not have the authority to reduce staffing on airport rescue fire fighting (arff) equipment required by department of defense (dod) policy and that the employer must either return to previous staffing levels or apply for a waiver from dod. in the decision, the arbitrator agreed with the iaff’s position and held that the command violated dod policy and the governing provisions of the labor contracts which required it to adhere to pertinent regulations and policies. (read more...) firefighters pension system responds to the financial crisis submitted by robert jones, executive director oklahoma state firefighters pension and retirement system september 29, 2008 - a number of our members have voiced concern regarding the current financial crisis and how it will affect future retirement benefit payments and plan b account balances. while the news of the financial markets can be understandably concerning, it is important for our members to know that your retirement assets are securely protected and not directly affected by the current credit crisis. the pension system along with its investment advisors is closely monitoring the fund's exposure to the financial sector. our diversified portfolio will help weather the storm as it did during the last recession of 2001--2002. plan b participants are reminded that their deferred benefit accounts are invested exactly in the same manner as the pension assets. all members and their beneficiaries are further reminded that as long as the united states of america and the state of oklahoma remain strong, the security of their future pension benefits and plan b accounts will remain strong. your state pension board is confident that as this country has weathered financial crisis in the past, it will also weather this financial crisis. the current challenge will be to deal with our fears including the fear reported by the financial news services and fear of the unknown. please keep in mind that the assets of this pension system were deployed in anticipation of events such as the current crisis long before this crisis began. we are confident that not only will we get through these turbulent times, but that we will prosper in the future. victorville firefighters settle class action suit against city city cuts checks for backpay (the victorville daily press) september 26, 2008 - the city has decided to settle a class action lawsuit filed by the former victorville professional firefighters, according to attorneys for the union. “we were able to vindicate the rights of the firefighters,” said sanjay bansal, an attorney with lackie, dammeier & mcgill. there were 47 victorville firefighters as plaintiffs in the class action suit, filed against the city and the victorville fire department in november. the firefighters claimed victorville was violating the federal fair labor standards act regarding employee wages and overtime. after 10 months of negotiations with the city and litigation in federal court, bansal said the city has started to pay. (read more...) court sides with firefighter in city suit (orlandosentinel.com) september 26, 2008 - the florida supreme court sided with a former orlando firefighter in a long-running medical claim against the city, but the man didn't live long enough to see the victory. in 2001, bob flamily drew national attention with his claim that orlando officials had failed to share years of his own medical test results showing symptoms of hepatitis c. the case prompted other orlando firefighters to check their own files at a city-run employee clinic, find undiscovered ailments and join a lawsuit against the city. the suit ultimately failed, but the city changed the way it provides medical care for its firefighters. flamily's case started when he took medical retirement from the orlando fire department in 1996 due to a heart condition and accepted a worker's compensation settlement of about $100,000. but he came to believe city officials had misled him about how much he should have received. (endorsement...) (union president's comments...) amid partisan gridlock, iaff scores 11th hour legislative victory (international association of fire fighters) september 25, 2008 - despite continuing partisan wrangling ahead of the november elections, legislation strengthening the u.s. fire administration (usfa) is on the verge of becoming law. both chambers of congress have voted to pass s. 2606, the united states fire administration reauthorization act of 2008. the legislation, sponsored by senators christopher dodd (d-ct) and susan collins (r-me) in the senate and representative harry mitchell (d-az) in the house, includes key iaff recommendations to expand and improve usfa’s training activities, improve fire fighter safety and better serve the needs of the modern fire service. the legislation also authorizes funding to improve usfa’s data collection efforts through the national fire incident reporting system (nfirs) to better identify fire safety trends. (read more...) iaff monitoring irs review of retirement eligibility standards (international association of fire fighters) september 25, 2008 - iaff governmental relations staff has been working with members of congress on both sides of the aisle to ensure that an internal revenue service (irs) review that began in 2007 of requirements concerning the appropriate age at which public employees may qualify for a service retirement doesn't negatively affect public safety workers. under the proposed regulations, normal retirement age for most workers would range from between 55-62, but a special provision for public safety officers permits a normal retirement age as low as 50. however, the newly proposed regulation from the irs has called into question the use of years of service to determine eligibility for a full pension benefit. for example, under the new regulation, a system that allows fire fighters to retire at the completion of 25 years of service, regardless of age, could run afoul of the new irs-proposed regulations. (fye09 & fye10 tentative agreement...) firefighters bombarded with hundreds of sexual advances sue city trial nears in case of san diego firefighters forced to take part in “gay pride” parade (the california catholic daily) september 8, 2008 - jury selection was scheduled to begin today in the case of four san diego firefighters who have sued the city, saying they were forced to participate in the 2007 “gay pride” parade and subjected to sexually demeaning gestures and catcalls as a consequence. capt. john ghiotto, engineer jason hewitt and firefighters chad allison and alex kane filed the civil lawsuit, alleging their superiors forced them, in full uniform and on their city fire truck, to attend the july 21, 2007 san diego “gay pride” parade over their objections. they are being represented by the ann arbor, michigan-based thomas more law center. “you could not even look at the crowd without getting some kind of sexual gesture,” said one of the firefighters in a law center press release issued shortly after the event. “if any crew member were to hang up pictures at the station of what we saw, we would be disciplined.” (read more...) study finds 110,349 call norman home (newsok.com) september 8, 2008 - latest estimates indicate norman's population has topped 110,000, city planners said. planning manager doug koscinski said the number is based on u.s. census bureau figures and the number of building permits issued in norman every year. "we just do the math. we take the u.s. census bureau's figure and use it as a baseline, then look at the number of building permits issued each year and add in about how many people that would be. we also take into consideration the number of vacancies in the city.” right now, the planning department is using an official figure of 110,349, said joyce green, the city's geographic information systems manager. "that's the figure we arrived at for 2007, and the figure we will use through december, so it's kind of a moving target. we know it's changed some since january, but we don't know how much,” koscinski said. a particularly rapid growth spurt occurred in norman in the 1970s, koscinski said. "there was one year we issued 3,000 building permits.” when growth is that rapid, he said, "it's usually followed by a crash, because the city can't keep pace. we prefer growth to occur at a steadier pace,” he said. union meeting scheduled for october august 27, 2008 - there will be a two-shift union meeting held on october 6th & 7th, 2008. the meetings will be held at the mid-town plaza, 7:00 p.m., 300 west gray, lower level, conference room. agenda items are now been posted for your consideration. the door prize will be $150.00 for this meeting.
