at approximately central alerted station 7 pittsville of a mvc with rescue, with the possibility of one vehicle being on fire and one overturned at the intersection of 60ft rd and rt. 50 westbound. maryland state police quickly arrived on scene and advised central that there was no rescue. crews arrived on scene to find a 2 car mvc with an suv overturned in a ditch. ems personnel quickly assessed the patients in which both patients were refusals. one lane of rt. 50 was shut down while emergency crews took care of the patients and the vehicles.units on scene : ambulance a-7, ambulance b-7, rescue 7, engine 703, command 7, traffic control 7, maryland state police, firepolicefithp photographers on scene : billy adkins, cliff shockley on location with fithp - msp trooper 2 crashes in pg county - 4 dead click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 28, 2008 -  is with great sadness that we bring this news story to you.our thoughts and prayers go out to all those aboard and thier families.1. stephen h. bunker, the 59-year-old pilot from waldorf, md. bunker had retired as a corporal in 1998 after 26-years with msp. he returned as a civilian pilot. bunker had been flying for msp for 24-years and was a certified flight instructor and a certified instrument flight instructor. stephen bunker was married with three grown children.2. tfc mickey c. lippy, the 34-year-old flight paramedic from westminster, md. trooper lippy joined msp four-year-ago. prior to that lippy had been a firefighter and medic with the anne arundel county fire department. he had been assigned to station 18 (marley) for much of his career. trooper lippy had recently returned from family leave following the birth of his daughter, now four-months-old. lippy was also a volunteer with the owings mills volunteer fire company in baltimore county. he worked part-time as a firefighter with gamber & comunity fire company in carroll county, md. lippy's wife works full-time for gamber.3. tanya mallard, the 38-year-old emt-b from waldorf, md. mallard was an emt-b with waldorf vfd's station 12. mallard is survived by her husband and two children.4. ashley j. younger of waldorf, md. she was the 17-year-old victim of the automobile accident.maryland state police press release(forestville, md) -- four of five people aboard a maryland state police medevac helicopter have been killed in a crash that occurred early this morning in prince george’s county.the fatalities include the state police pilot and flight paramedic, a fire/rescue medical provider, and a patient. a second patient on-board survived the crash and has been transported to the prince george’s hospital center. the crash occurred within a wooded area of the walker mill regional park, off of berry lane and ritchie road in forestville, md.at about 11:00 p.m. yesterday, maryland state police helicopter, trooper 2, was dispatched to the scene of a traffic crash in the waldorf area. trooper 2 responded from its hangar at the andrews air force base. trooper 2 picked up two female patients and a medical provider from the rescue squad to assist the state police flight paramedic during the flight to the prince george’s hospital center. during the flight, the helicopter disappeared from radar. state police and prince george’s county police and fire were notified and a search began.shortly before 2:00 a.m. today, the helicopter crash site was found. the helicopter was in a wooded area of the park. the four victims were pronounced dead at the scene. a cause of the crash is not known at this time. colonel terrence sheridan, superintendent of the maryland state police, is on the scene, as are state police investigators. the national transportation safety board and the federal aviation administration have been notified and are on the scene. note:a media briefing site has been set up at the north forestville elementary school, located in the 2400-block of ritchie road, forestville, md. story from maryland state policepg county fire ems press releasestatter 911 newswbal tv storypictures are from msp aviation website waldorf vfd on location with fithp - single vehicle mvc w/rollover, ejection, entrapment - harrington, del. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 26, 2008 -  22:24 hours kent center alerted station 50 (harrington), kent county ems (km-8 and km-5), and dsp aviation (trooper 2) for an mvc with rollover, ejection, entrapment, and possible mci on hopkins cemetery road just west of pine pitch road. ambulance b-48 (felton) was on the road and added to the initial response.command 50 (with 50-17, ralph tucker) responded and kent center reported that there was believed to be four patients, with one ejection and possibly two patients trapped. kent center also advised that a-49 (frederica) was in quarters with a crew and was being added to the response. both dsp and msp aviation units were down due to weather, and command requested an additional ambulance from station 42 (carlisle of milford) be added. units found a vehicle on its roof with one patient pinned by the vehicle, one patient who had been ejected, and two others who had extricated themselves. while the ems crews tended to the three patients already out, the crews from rescue 50 and engine 50-5 worked to stabilize the vehicle and free the one patient. extrication was completed about 22:45, and the scene placed under control shortly after.two of the patients were transported to milford memorial and the other two to kent general hospital.units on scene: command 50, rescue 50, engine 50-5, ambulances a-50, c-50, b-48, a-49, a-42, paramedic km-8, paramedic supervisor km-5, harrington pd, and delaware state policeambulance a-78 (greenwood) covered station 50fithp photographers on scene: brian slattery & ryan whittington on location with fithp - commercial structure fire - broad st. - salisbury click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 25, 2008 -  01:38 hours, wicomico central alerted stations 16, 2 and 1 to a structure fire at 229 broad st. an additional call came into central advising it was a law office and fire fully involved. the first salisbury unit on scene confirmed heavy fire from side a, two story commerical structure. the crews immediately went into defense mode to protect nearby structures in this densely occupied block. the state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire. additional details about the fire and units responding will be posted soon. on location with fithp - fatal motorcycle accident - hebron, md click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 21, 2008 -  17:00 hours, wicomico central alerted station 5 (hebron) to a mvc collision involving a motorcycle at the intersection of nanticoke rd. and westbrooke dr. it was reported that the cyclist was ejected, and further update came in to 911 that subject had stopped breathing. hebron units arrived and found patient in full arrest and began cpr. he was transported priority 1 to prmc, where according to wmdt-tv he was pronounced dead. maryland state police closed nanticoke road from crooked oak ln. to rockawalkin rd for a couple hours during their investigation.units responding: paramedic a5, ambulance b5, rescue pumper 501, car 5, wicomico county sheriff's deputies, maryland state police on location with fithp - single car mvc w/ rollover - fruitland click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 20, 2008 -  23:25 hours, wicomico central alerted station 3 (fruitland) and salisbury paramedic 1 to a mvc with rollover on coulbourn mill rd., south of old fruitland rd. it was reported as possible ejection. 3-24 arrived on location in personal vehicle confirming 1 patient, and advising car was located at a sharp turn in the woods closer to old post rd. rescue 3-02 arrived on scene with deputy chief jeff shrieves in command. paramedic 16-1 transported 1 patient priority 2 (due to mechanism) to prmc for treatment. scene was released to maryland state police at 00:12 hours.units responding; 3-24 pov, rescue 3-02, pm 16-1, maryland state police on location with fithp - vehicle extrication/rescue demo - harrington fire co. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 20, 2008 -  part of the city of harrington's annual heritage day, the harrington fire company held an open house that included a vehicle extrication/rescue demonstration. personnel exhibited how they operate on the scene of motor vehicle collisions with stabilizing vehicles and use of hydraulic tools to pop doors, remove the vehicle's roof, and roll the dashboard. the session was also used to let newer personnel learn about techniques. on location with fithp - tractor trailer rollover - rt 54 - delmar click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 19, 2008 -  20:17 hours sussex eoc alerted station 74 (delmar) to a traffic accident on delmar rd (rt. 54) just west of horsey church rd. updated information came in that it was a tractor-trailer overturned with possible entrapment. at that time sussex medic 102 and trooper 2 were alerted as well. paramedic a-74 arrived on scene to find a truck with an open top trailer of pine mulch had overturned into a shallow ditch. it was determined that delmar units could handle the call and 102 and trooper 2 were returned to service. crews worked for about 30 minutes removing and stablizing the patient. driver was transported with moderate back and leg injuries to prmc. fire crews remained for an additional hour until scene was release to delaware dot. state dot workers began off-loading the cargo around 9:45. once emptied, heavy salvage wreckers will upright and move the truck. rt 54 is expected to remain closed from horsey church rd to providence church rd. until after midnight. delaware state police are investigating the cause of the accident, it is unknown at this time if charges are pending.units responding: rescue 74, engine 74-1, command 74, paramedic a-74, ambulance b-74. also alerted: sussex medic 102 and trooper 2 medivac. on location with fithp - fatal house fire - mt. pleasant rd. - laurel, de click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 19, 2008 -  51-year-old woman died in a house fire thursday night in laurel.belinda a. carmean was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire at a home in the 31000 block of mount pleasant road.firefighters from laurel, delmar and sharptown who responded to the fire at 9:02 p.m. found a small fire at the home and a woman being administered cpr by a family member outside, the state fire marshal's office reported.carmean was identified by the state medical examiner's office. the cause of death has not yet been determined.the two-story wood frame home suffered minor fire and smoke damage. there were no working smoke detectors, the fire marshal's report said.the fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.story from the daily timesphotographers on scene : cliff shockley, jr adkins, wayne barrall on location with fithp - caroline county department of emergency services holds hazmat drill. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 19, 2008 -  caroline county department of emergency services recently participated in a regional hazardous materials training exercise held in cambridge. the program was hosted at the new cambridge public safety building by the regional hazmat training committee with instructors and simulation props provided by the maryland fire and rescue institute. area instructors included tom harmon, mike collins, dan tuel, and greg socks. representative from multiple local emergency departments learned to cooperate in controlling emergency situations involving hazardous materials.other area organizations attending the training session included rescue fire company, dorchester county emergency management, dorchester county ems, talbot county ems, and the talbot county local emergency planning committee. also participating were the kent county department of emergency services, queen anne’s county department of emergency services, ridgely volunteer fire department, maryland emergency management agency, and the maryland institute for emergency medical services.the morning session included classroom instruction on how to handle various hazardous materials emergencies. after lunch, participants worked with various simulated emergencies, including a leak emergency on a tanker. several teams of personnel formed entry, decontamination, surveillance, and medical groups. everyone functioned under the national incident command system.bryan ebling, director of caroline county department of emergency services, and cindy towers, assistant director of des’ emergency management and risk management division observed the exercise.“it is important for area departments to work together in a seamless fashion when a hazardous materials emergency strikes,” stated ebling. “caroline county department of emergency services relies on the support from the various emergency services departments in surrounding counties. we want to practice together in order to be ready when we are confronted with a real emergency in our community!”photos by: bryan milliganstory from: 1st responder news on location with fithp - mfri rescue tech hands-on demonstration click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 13, 2008 -  morning the current rescue tech class had their vehicle stabilization and extrication practical day. under the direction of instructor dave kulley and support instructors; jay jester, vinnie palmer, tim mullen, and jimmy gladwell, students spent a informing day learning about stabilization and extrication. members of the class were able to practice with box cribbing, step chocks, and airbags. since the class has a good mixture of station members attending, students were able to practice with hurst and holmatro airbags. we also went through a non-hydraulic door removal, using only a ‘tin cutter’ and hand tools. after a short lunch, the real fun began with the bringing out of the hydraulic tools. holmatro was kind enough to lend a brand new set of tools and hydraulic pump to mfri for the class to use. also available to the class was the local hurst truck with plenty of tools available to use. with the availability of so many tools, the students made quick work of the vehicles. students took turns with the hydraulic tools to get a feel for how they work. we were able to take the roof off of each vehicle, and were shown how not only hydraulic tools, but everyday power tools can come in very handy in an extrication situation. students also practiced a hydraulic door pop, dash lift/roll, and a 3rd door. i’m sure that i’m forgetting something, and if so, sorry about that.thanks to the mfri instructors.thanks to station 7 pittsville for letting us use their cars, property and equipment.thanks to station 15 allen and station 11 powellville for letting us use their equipment.thanks to holmatro and hurst for the use of their tools. on location with fithp - single car mvc - whitesville rd, delmar click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 10, 2008 -  7:17am sussex eoc alerted station 74 (delmar) & medic 102 to a motor vehicle accident in the 11500 block of whitesville rd. upon arrival it was found a single passenger was already out of the vehicle and was without apparent injuries. medic 102 was placed back in service, and a-74 evaluated patient. rescue 74 arrived to secure the vehicle pending tow company. incident was cleared at 7:52am. units on scene: a-74, medic 102 & rescue 74 on location with fithp - overturned 18 wheeler - salisbury md. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 9, 2008 - 4:30 am the wicomico county eoc alerted sta.2 salisbury and paramedic-2 for an accident with injuries on the rt.50 by-pass east of the centre rd exit. while enroute crews were advised that this would be an overturned tractor trailer in the median strip. engine 210 arrived on location to find the 18 wheeler lying on its side. paramedic-2 evaluated the driver which in turned refused treatment claiming he was unhurt. reports are that the driver came from ohio the day before and was heading to crisfield md with a load of tomatoes when he fell asleep at the wheel.wrecker crews spent most of the morning trying to upright the 18 wheeler. maryland state police blocked 4 lanes of traffic during the event. on location with fithp - training - delmar fire department click on the image to see all of the images for this story. september 8, 2008 - 9-08-08 the delmar fire department traveled to delaware state fire school in georgetown delaware for some scba & live fire training at the burn center. this was a good time for some of the newer members of the department to gain first hand training on the proper ways to use scba along with the proper maintenance of the unit. crews also were able to feel a little heat inside a burn building. instructors ignited straw inside the building and allowed the young fire fighters to work as a team to put the fire out and perform search and rescue operations. these members gained valuable information to help them become better firefighters.this was the 1st of a 3 part series that the delmar fire department has planned at the delaware state fire school.to view video of the night go here and enjoy training video on location with fithp - mva w/ jack knifed trailer - delmar de. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 31, 2008 - wh the delmar fire department was already on an ‘automatic fire alarm’ call, they were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on rt.13 in the area of iron hill rd. crews arrived to find a small mazda in the middle of the north bound lanes of rt.13 and a full size pick and a trailer carrying a dragster in the median strip.fire police crews shut down both lanes traffic on rt.13 north bound and one lane on the south bound lane of rt.13.rescue crews checked both vehicles for any leaks and cleaned up a lot of grass and dirt on the roadway. ems crews checked out a total of 5 people that was involved in the accident. all 5 refused treatment.police reported the accident happened when the white mazda left the south bound roadway at a high rate of speed and crossed the median strip making contact with the pick-up and trailer which then jacked knifed into the median strip.responding units:74 command, rescue 74, engine 74-2 and the delaware state police. on location with fithp - car fire - gumboro click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 29, 2008 - ar 6:30am the pittsville fire department was alerted for a vehicle fire on east line rd near guy ward rd. while engine 703 a member of their department advised them that the car would be closer to whitesville rd. just after sta.7 pittsville was alerted the sussex co eoc alerted sta.79 gumboro for the same call. engine 703 arrived first and had the situation under control when the engine from gumboro arrived.crews arrived to find a car with heavy fire in the engine compartment. one 1 ¾ line was put in service and the fire was put out with in a matter of minutes.fire police from both stations shut down east line rd while fire crews put the fire out.units on scene: engine 703, rescue 7 and the delaware state police. on location with fithp - controlled burn - parsonsburg md. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 28, 2008 - on thursday august 28, 2008, firefighters from parsonsburg conducted a controlled burning of a chicken house on johnson rd. just west of wango rd. parsonsburg was assisted by salisbury fd, sta.1; powellville vfc, sta.11; and fruitland vfc, sta.3. everyone met at the south end of the chicken house and recieved their assignments. engine 607 set up draft in the branch just east of the burn site and supplied engine 1103 that was set up on the 'd' end. engine 1-1 & tanker 1101 protected the exposures in the middle on side 'a' while engine 605 & tanker 305 covered the 'b'end. both 605 & 1103 covered the 'c' side of the structure with handlines coming from each end of the chicken house. tanker 608 was used to shuttle water from the draft site to fill the tankers from 3 & 11. the training went very well and we like to thank salisbury, powellville, and fruitland for their assistance and for hanging in there for somewhat of a long night. 622 (lt. j.willey was the oic). go here video of the controlled burn to see the video. units on scene: parsonsburg - t-bone accident sends two patients to trauma center- felton, de click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 25, 2008 - on monday, august 25, 2008, at 1718 hours kent county eoc alerted station 48 for a motor vehicle accident with injuries in the area of willow grove road & cow marsh creek road. a-48 responded just after dispatch and b-48 shortly after.rescue / engine 48-1 responded with fire chief kevin rains (48-15). a-48 arrived on scene and found a two vehicle mvc with two patients. a-48 requested als after rapid triage of patients and also advised 48-15 there was need for a door pop on vehicle # 1.chief rains arrived on scene and had his crew assist the ems personnel and began to set-up for extrication. engine 48-3 arrived on scene and assisted with extrication. crews had the door removed within minutes.felton ems transported 2 subjects to kent general hospital in dover.units responding: a-48, b-48, rescue / engine 48-1, engine 48-3, km-7, dsp, 48 fp story by: ryan whittingtonphotos by: rodney simons on location with fithp - salisbury fire department formal public dedication click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 23, 2008 - th salisbury fire department held a formal dedication ceremony of the new fire station 16 and fire headquarters facilities located at 325 cypress street, on saturday, august, 23rd at 10 am. there was a welcome address from mayor barrie parsons tilghman, and remarks from chief david b. see. the keynote speaker for the ceremony was mr. gregory cade, the federal emergency management agency’s assistant administrator for the u.s. fire administration. representatives of the masonic lodges of maryland were on hand to help with a special cornerstone ceremony. a traditional fire department ribbon cutting display took place, with the usual fire department twist.after the ceremonies, there was an open house in which all doors in the station were unlocked. attendees were allowed to tour the entire station, from the kitchen and living area, to the administrative offices nothing was off limits. members of the sfd spec ops team were on hand for high angle rescue demonstrations. the maryland state police were also on hand with ‘the convincer’. the convincer is designed to simulate a accident at 10 miles per hour. you are seat belted into a seat, and when released it slides down to a sudden stop to show you the feeling of an actual accident.it was a great day for the opening of the station. on location with fithp - house fire spruce st delmar, md click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 20, 2008 - ju after 8:30am sta.74 delmar, sta.2 salisbury and sta.5 hebron was alerted for a working structure fire with a report of 2 people trapped inside at 101 spruce st in delmar. deputy chief d. scott arrived to find a 1 ½ story dwelling with smoke and fire visible from the exterior. all occupants were accounted for that was living in the home. first arriving delmar unit was engine 74-3, they were ordered to pull past the home and hit the hydrant and advance a 1 ¾ hose line thru the front door. truck-74 along with truck-2 was ordered to ladder the roof and ventilate. the crew from hebron’s engine 503 assisted the interior crews with containing the fire. crews were on scene for nearly 3 hours. the maryland state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.fithp photographers on scene : billy adkins and cliff shockley on location with fithp - mfri rescue tech rope rescue class click on the image to see all of the images for this story. august 19, 2008 - as a class exercise, the rescue tech class went to naylor mill rd, just off of the bypass to practice some 'hands on' angle rescue. a dummy was placed at the bottom of the slope and the class had to take turns doing different parts of the rescue. one part of the class would setup a belay line while the other part of the class setup the lowering line with a brake-bar in place. once the brake-bar line was in place the third group would slowly take the stokes basket down to load and package the patient. after the third group was on the bottom, then the group at the top would take out the brake-bar and then setup a 'z-rig' pulley system to prepare to raise the victim from the slope. as they pulled the victim from the slope, a belay line was in place and manned in the event that something happened to the main line. once the victim was successfully pulled up, he was then placed at the bottom again, and the groups would switch places and do it all over again. this way all members of the class would be able to see and participate in each part of the rescue.thanks to cliff shockley for coming out to take the pictures.thanks to dave kulley for allowing cliff to come photograph the class.thanks to all of the support instructors, david hanes, tim mullen, and john barnett, for all of thier help.thanks to the fire police (traffic control 6) for keeping us safe. on location with fithp - 5th annual mason dixon emergency services softball tournament click on the image to see all of the images for this story. july 25, 2008 - this weekend was filled with plenty of fun, food and heat! 16 teams from around the eastern shore came to play in the 6th annual mason dixon emergency services softball tournament sponsored by the delmar fire department. the games began friday night where the ‘’old timers’’ took on the ‘’young guns’’ of the dfd. the young guns came out on top in a fun filled game.saturday began early at 7:00am and 16 games were played that day. around noon ‘’life net’’ medical helicopter landed near the field so everyone could get a up close look at the new airship. they were on the ground for about 1 ½ hours and everyone enjoyed their time spent looking at the helicopter. sunday proved to be just as long with 10 games played and periods of heavy storm passing thru the area.the teams were determined to play ball and battle each other and mother nature. after a short rain delay games continued.the winners were every team out there. but the ones that walked away with trophies are:1st place – westend2nd place – churchill fire department3rd place – laurel fire departmentthe delmar fire department would like to thank the hebron fire department for providing an engine crew for stand by at the field so the delmar gang could play their game on friday night. hebron's chief beach also won one of the 50/50 raffles and donated part of his winnings back to our department.if any department would like photos for their web site just email us and we will send the ones you want.thanks go out to all the teams. hope to see you again next year!click here for game results. on location with fithp - mvc with rescue - morris leonard & walston switch click on the image to see all of the images for this story. july 7, 2008 - at 1137 hrs, sta.6 was alerted for an mvc at walston switch rd. & ocean gtwy. within seconds, central alerted another mvc with entrapment at morris leonard & walston switch rd. while enroute to the station for the first call, 615 (chief white) came upon the rescue, upon assessment of the accident, he confirmed a working rescue. 617 (asst. chief tyler) was at the station splitting crews up to cover both calls. re604 & b6 went to the morris leonard call while e605 & pma6 handled the rt.50 call. the call on rt.50 was unfound and units diverted to the rescue. 620 (lt. j.t. tyler) arrived at the rescue and assumed command while 615 was involved with patient care. command advised 1 priority 1 patient trapped and a second patient out of the vehicle was a priority 3. to assist with extrication, a tow truck winched the van off the driver side of the car and crews were able to go directly in to where the driver was pinned. upon arrival of the units from the first call, 620 transferred command to 617 and assumed operations. the personnel from rescue 7 (pittsville) were able to make quick work of the door removal and ems personnel were able to remove the patient. once packaged, parsonsburg ems transported both patients to prmc in salisbury, md. many thanks to billy adkins from fire in the hole photography for the pictures. visit www.fithp.net for more. units on scene: parsonsburg - wayne barrall & cliff shockley on location with fithp - maryland red knights chapter 3 - iron butt ride click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 28, 2008 - toni the maryland red knights chapter 3 returned from the iron butt ride. the riders left the berlin wal-mart last night just past 9pm to ride 1099 miles in 24 hours. the idea of the iron butt ride is to raise money for the lupus foundation. it involves all three states of delmarva. the ride is conducted in a self-paced style, that is to say that there will be a number of bikes participating, but they will be riding in groups no larger than 4 and 2 or 3 is preferred for safety reasons. each rider will be able to ride at his or her own pace and follow the course stopping when it is necessary for each of the individuals or riding pairs. safety will be of the utmost importance. each rider will be linked by cell phone to the lead car and the following truck. this will allow riders to be informed and to inform the lead and following vehicle if there are any problems. *no riders will be expected to talk while riding, they will however be expected to check in with the lead or following cars from time to time during fuel and rest stops. in total there were 17 participants in the ride. as soon as i am able, i will get a list of the people that participated in the ride. the majority of the riders returned tonight at 7:20. as you can imagine they were all pretty tired, but were all in good spirits. some of the participants came from as far away as parksley, virginia. enjoy the pictures from the departure and the return. congratulations to all of the participants of the rideyou can find out more about the maryland red knights chapter 3 at their website. http://www.redknightsmd3.org photographers: departure: wayne barrall, billy adkinsreturn: billy adkins, cliff shockley on location with fithp - new firehouse dedication - claymont, de click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 22, 2008 - june 22, 2008the claymont fire company dedicated their new firehouse this afternoon. the new building replaces the station built by the membership of the claymont fire company between 1952-54. president tom dicristofaro lead the ceremonies starting with the posting of the colors. the flags were escorted by the anderson family, who donated the money for the new flagpoles. company chaplain john gayton offered prayers for the new building and to all those who serve the community from it. state and county officials, including lt. governor john carney and county executive chris coons spoke briefly and presented resolutions from both the state legislature and county council. ribbons were cut on each of the eight apparatus bays. those cutting the ribbons included the state and local legislators, past chiefs and presidents of the claymont fire company and the ladies auxiliary, current officers, and long serving members selected to represent the memberships of both the company and ladies auxiliary.ceremonies concluded with the housing of engine 132 by members of neighboring fire companies and then truck 13 by the membership of claymont.photos by brian slattery on location with fithp - funeral services for paramedic stephanie callaway- georgetown, de click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 21, 2008 - geor del. - large crowds turned out to pay their respects for a sussex county paramedic. the funeral for stephanie callaway was held in georgetown on saturday.she was killed tuesday morning in an ambulance crash. the ambulance crashed on route 24 because the driver was trying to avoid hitting a deer.callaway is the first sussex county ems employee killed in the line of duty. more than 100 fire, police and ambulance departments across the state participated in the procession. there were departments as far north as boston and as far south as north carolina, all wanting to pay their respects.calloway's viewing was at delmarva christian high school and the funeral at delaware technical and community college owens campus.those who knew her say is hard saying goodbye.''right now, i'm still very numb, it's still hard to believe that she's gone, of all people, she's not somebody we wanted to lose,'' said tammi brode, former ambulance captain for the harrington fire department. brode says she's known callaway for eight years - fatal mva involving an ambulance - lewes, de click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 18, 2008 - a sussex county paramedic and 82-year-old patient were killed early today when the ambulance they were riding in swerved to miss a deer and smashed into a tree. officials called it a tragic accident. 'we are having our worst day,'said emergency medical services director glenn luedtke, choking up and nearly unable to speak. 'we are a family.'paramedic stephanie l. callaway, 31, and patient betty j. hall, 82, died in the crash. callaway was in the rear of the ambulance attending to hall. the ambulance, based at the mid-sussex rescue center in the millsboro area, was heading east on del. 24, taking hall from a long neck-area nursing home to beebe medical center in lewes, with lights and sirens on. about 2:40 a.m., when a deer darted out into the road, the ambulance driver swerved and the right wheels left the pavement and went into soft dirt, state police said. the rear of the 2005 ford ambulance then struck a tree, creating a large gash on the right side before hitting other trees. hall and emergency medical technician brice h. hickman, 47, of dagsboro, were ejected. ambulance driver michael e. wissman, 34, of frankford, was also injured in the crash. hickman and wissman were being treated at beebe medical center. the area is heavily wooded and known for deer running across the road. state police maj. randall hughes said the ambulance's speed is unknown at this point, but said weather did not play a role in the crash. police crash reconstruction teams are investigating. the crash occurred near a joint substation of the lewes and rehoboth fire companies. an ambulance on the way back from another call was first on the scene. counselors were on hand at paramedic headquarters to talk with co-workers, and duty assignments were being adjusted to accommodate medics who had been close to callaway. two staff members have been assigned to help her family in whatever they need, luedtke said. county flags were at half-staff until further notice. luedtke wore a black band around his paramedic badge today. story courtesy of : the news journalphotos by chuck snyder on location with fithp - fatal accident w/ rescue - delmar md. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 15, 2008 - arou 2:10pm the delmar fire department was alerted for an accident with rescue on jersey rd. crews arrived to find a ford f150 pick up that was carrying four people inside on its roof in the middle of the road. ems providers checked the status of the driver and were unable to locate a pulse and he was pronounced at the scene. an ambulance was requested from sta.5 hebron to transport one of the occupants to the hospital. the two others inside did not receive any injuries and refused treatment at the scene. crews remained on scene while the maryland state police along with the medical examiners office conducted their investigations. jersey rd was shut down for nearly 3 ½ hours during this alarm.responding units:74 command, rescue 74, 74 fire police, paramedic b-74, paramedic a-5 and the maryland state police. **** on a personal note. this incident took its toll on a few of us personally. many of us knew the driver very well and went to school with him. he was a very nice person and easily got along with everyone! our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the driver. this same time last year the driver was presented with a public life saving award by the delmar fire department for his role in the life saving efforts of a young drowning victim this same time last year in delmar!**** on location with fithp - mva w/ rescue - delmar del. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 15, 2008 - just after midnight, sta.74 delmar & medic 102 was alerted for a accident with injuries on rt.13 north of delmar. crews arrived to find a ford mustang down an embankment with the driver trapped inside. ems crews went to work with patient care while the crew of rescue 74 set up for a extrication. they had to pop both doors to gain access to the driver. she was removed and transported to prmc in salisbury md for treatment.the delmar police department along with delaware state police were on scene conducting an investigation to the cause of the accident. the driver some how lost control and left the roadway about 150 feet prior to where she came to rest. she hit a driveway embankment and went air borne for about 50 feet and over turned when landing further down the road. the driver was very lucky not to be injured any more than she was!the delmar fire police shut down one lane of rt.13 during the alarm. on location with fithp - on the evening of june 09, 2008, the parsonsburg fire company hosted a drill with live burn evolutions. the acquired house was located on walston switch rd near wor wic community college. firefighters from pittsville, powellville, salisbury sta.1, & delmar participated in the training with us, which concentrated on fire behavior and extinguishment. the drill was conducted under the guidelines of nfpa 1403. once the evolutions were completed, the house was burned down (which took a while to get going). thanks goes to the photographers from fithp for getting a few shots. units on location were: parsonsburg - fatal - technical rescue - delmar del. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 4, 2008 - at 2:34pm the sussex co eoc alerted sta.74 delmar for a subject trapped at the allen’s feed mill north of town. crews arrived to find a group of allen’s workers digging at a pile of soybeans. reports came in as a worker who was changing out a motor on one of the silo’s became trapped after the soybeans inside the silo rushed out and buried the worker and a fork lift under about 15 feet of grain.the sussex county technical rescue team was dispatched to the scene. this brought specially trained personal that have been trained in these types of rescues. crews started to try and dig down to the subject but soybeans kept filling in the area that they were working in. rescue workers had to close the hole in the side of the silo to keep the soybeans from pouring out. they used many sheets of plywood held in place by a back-hoe to cover the hole. crews were able to locate the victim and tied a rescue rope to him. special vacuum trucks were used to suck the grain away from the area.74 command was advised of heavy storms moving in the area in about 40 minutes. these storms were producing hail, heavy rain and 50 mph winds. crews went to work to recover the 46 year old male victim before the storms moved in.after 2 ½ hours, crews were able to pull the lifeless victim out from the soybeans were he was transferred to an awaiting ambulance.the delaware state police was on scene and conducting an investigation to the cause of the accident. everyone and all the departments worked very well together and as a team during this very difficult rescue.responding units:rescue-74, engine 74-1, engine 74-3, paramedic a-74, sussex county technical team, trooper-2, sta.90 roxanna rehab and the delaware state police. on location with fithp - building fire - dover del. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. june 1, 2008 - inves with the delaware state fire marshal's office have ruled as accidental a sunday fire that destroyed a medical office building in dover.the fire was reported at 2:33 p.m. in the 1000 block of south governors avenue.the dover fire department responded to the call and arrived to find heavy fire in the attic of the one-story office building. the little creek, clayton, and cheswold fire companies were called to assist, with other surrounding fire departments called to stand by. it took more than 100 firefighters nearly two hours to get the blaze placed under control.the building was utilized as an office building for two physician specialists, but was unoccupied at the time of the fire. both practices received heavy fire damage as a result of the fire.the cause of the fire has determined to be an electrical failure in the primary electric service supplying power to the structure. damages are estimated at $3.5 million and no injuries were reported. the city of dover fire marshal's office assisted in the investigation. story from wboc tvphoto by brian slattery on location with fithp - early morning mvc with rescue in parsonsburg click on the image to see all of the images for this story. may 27, 2008 - wicom county emergency serivces alerted parsonsburg station 6 & pittsville station 7 for a mvc with roll over and entrapment in the area of walston switch rd and archie dennis rd.chief steve white arrived on location confirming entrapment and advised re-604 to lead off with their compliment of airbags. the crews worked to stabilize the vehicle with cribbing while the airbags were being deployed.rescue 7 arrived on location and took over vehicle stabilization while the crew of re-604 deployed the airbags. the patient was removed and transported to prmc pri 1 due to mechanism. on location with fithp - mvc rt 50 entrance to rt 13 bypass click on the image to see all of the images for this story. may 26, 2008 - at approximately 12:00 pm wicomico central alerted salisbury station 1 for a motor vehicle accident on westbound ocean gateway and the entrance to the rt. 13 bypass. crews arrived on scene to find a two vehicle mvc with one vehicle in the ditch in the woods. once on scene command called for an additional ambulance for patient care and transport. rt. 50 westbound along with the entrance to the bypass were both shutdown for approximately 40 minutes. units on scene : ems 1, engine 1, paramedic 1, paramedic 2, maryland state police, hart to heart (2 units) on location with fithp - drowning - salisbury md. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. may 26, 2008 - aroun 7:30pm on saturday night crews from sta.16 & 2 were alerted for a water rescue on johnson pond in the area of the rose st. dam. as many as five people were on a ledge of the dam fishing when one of them lost their footing and fell into the pond. another man jumped in trying to help the other guy and both of them went under the water. a third fisherman jumped in trying to save the others but was unable to find them. a fisherman from the ledge actually used his fishing rod to reel in the third man in the water. as crews started to arrive, divers started to prepare to enter the water. the dive unit deployed a boat for safer and better access on the water. maryland state police trooper-4 flew over head to give support with lighting the area. the dive team from sta.14 sharptown was reqested to respond to the scene. crews searched for nearly 2 ½ hours and had to stop searching due to night fall. crews met back up at sta.16 at 7am the next morning and discussed their plans for recovery. units headed back out to the same location for start up again. several divers entered the murky waters. they were hampered due to many obstacles underneath the water. maryland state dnr arrived with their boat and crew had to cut a pathway thru dense woods to deploy their boat. rescue crews walked the edges of the pond searching thru lily pads and the shallow parts of the pond while divers searched the deeper areas.around 9am divers found one of the missing men and recovered his body and transported him up to awaiting ambulance. crews kept searching the same area and a few minutes later found the 2nd missing man. both bodies were transported to prmc in salisbury. on location with fithp - controlled burn - powellville md. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. may 14, 2008 - the powellville volunteer fire department with help from pittsville & willards fire departments conducted a controlled burn on wango rd west of powellville. crews performed several live fire evolutions in the home. newer members were able to advance a hose line into a room full of fire and were able to put the fire out under the close supervision of older well trained firefighters. ladders were raised and used for a way of escape in case of an emergency.many cadets were able to gain knowledge of the proper ways to advance hose lines, were taught how to read smoke conditions and exterior fire attacks. also on scene was a local bloger named joe albero who owns and runs salisbury news. he gained valuable information on fire tactics and suppression. he was able to use actual fire fighting gear and enter the home under very close supervision and was able to flow water and feel some heat. i feel he left the drill with a better understanding of how the fire service works on a fire scene.all in all it was a good and educational drill for everyone involved.thanks to the powellville fire department for the invite!! on location with fithp - fatal trailer fire - delmar del. click on the image to see all of the images for this story. may 13, 2008 - at 1:34am the sussex county emergency 911 center alerted stations 74 delmar, 81 laurel, 5 hebron, medic 102, ems 200 for a working structure fire on comtempment lane west of delmar. 74 command arrived to find a mobile home fully involved with fire. there was one of the homes occupants desperately trying to gain access in one end of the home to rescue a 2nd person.engine 74-3 arrived and put in service two 1 ¾ hose lines. due to the extensive damage already done by the spread of fire, crews mainly did a defensive attack. a water shuttle was set up due to it being in the country side with no hydrants.a 16 year old male was inside when the fire started and tried several times to save his father still in his bedroom. he alerted a neighbor to the fire and returned to make several attempts at saving his father again. the family dog was also lost in the fire.the delaware state fire marshals office was called in to do an investigation as to the cause of the fire. units cleared the scene at 4:10am.** on a side note, when i went back in the morning to give the fire marshal’s office copies of all the photographs i took. the son had returned with his step mother and asked me what he would have to do to become a volunteer with our fire department. it was hard to stand there and talk to him knowing what he went through hours before and he already wants to give back to the fire department that helped him in his darkest hour of need. my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family** on location with fithp - serious mvc involving motorcycle - rt. 13 salisbury click on the image to see all of the images for this story. may 6, 2008 - at approximately 11:30am wicomico central alerted the salisbury fire department of a 2 vehicle mvc in front of wboc tv. crews arrived on scene to find a mvc involving a passenger van and motorcycle collision. the vehicles were located in the lorch microwave parking lot. the driver of the motorcycle was transported as priority 1 to prmc by paramedic 1, and was later flown to shock trauma. the driver of the van refused treatment at first as was later transported by paramedic 16-1 to prmc for chest pains. the maryland state police crash team was called in to investigate the accident. us rt. 13 was shut down for a short period of time, and then one lane of traffic was later allowed to pass through. crews remained on scene for about 1.5 hours.units on scene were: truck 2, paramedic 1, paramedic 16-1, salisbury police, maryland state police, and state highway administration. on location with fithp -
