(bud) doggett the department regrets to inform members of the passing of mr. leonard b. (bud) doggett.  mr. doggett passed away august 13, 2008 at the age of 87.  mr. doggett spent a lifetime assisting the public safety community as one of the founding members of h.e.r.o.e.s., inc.    he is remembered for his many charitable ventures to help the families of fallen firefighters and police officers.  chief rubin wishes to express his sincere condolences to the doggett family as well as fire & ems responded for the report of an injured construction worker at the site, 909 new jersey avenue, southeast.  first responders found a 42-year-old man who had been struck in the head by a piece of equipment on the seventh floor of the 12-story building under construction.  because there was no interior stairway or elevator, it was necessary to lower man to the ground through the use of the dcfd tower unit after he was immobilized into a stokes basket.  the man was secured, placed on the tower platform and lowered to the ground, where ems providers took over care.  he was transported to medstar with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.  the cause of the accident was being investigated by osha. man rescued in s.e. apartment fire now charged with setting the fire. alarm fire in n.w. hotel causes wedding party to evacuate august 9, 2008 by vito maggiolo a wedding party was among scores of people forced to flee a west end neighborhood hotel during a two alarm fire saturday evening, august 9th. firefighters arrived around 9:30 pm at the park hyatt hotel, 1221 24th street n.w., to find flames in the ductwork of a first floor restaurant. a working fire dispatch was sounded. when it was determined that the blaze may have extended into the walls on the first and second floors, as well as onto the roof, a second alarm was sounded. as units worked to open up and expose the fire, the dozens of wedding guests stranded outside were invited by another hotel nearby to continue their celebration. a most unusual fireground sight was the large wedding cake being wheeled past apparatus enroute to its new location. tne blaze was brought under control with no injuries to firefighters or civilians. auto fully involved in n.w. august 9, 2008 by vito maggiolo a fully involved auto in an upper northwest alley spread to fences on both sides before being controlled in the pre dawn hours on saturday, august 9th.   engine 31 was originally dispatched to an auto fire in an alley around 9th and butternut streets n.w. a triple local was sounded when further calls indicated that a garage may be involved.   firefighters arrived to find fire engulfing a car, as well as two fences burning. it took two handlines to extinguish the blaze. the fire investigator was requested. one firefighter injured in one story market fire august 9, 2008 by vito maggiolo one firefighter suffered burn injuries while battled a fierce blaze that gutted a one story market on rock creek church road during the wee hours of saturday, august 9.   units arrived around 3 am to find heavy fire blowing from the front entrance of the 50x50 structure at 646 rock creek church road n.w. a working fire dispatch was quickly sounded.   units began to open up the tightly locked and shuttered store, so that an interior attack could be mounted. also threatened were two row homes attached to the building on the b and c sides.   hand lines were finally able to move in and knock down the flames, which had also extended into the cockloft. there was no spread to the adjacent dwellings.   the burned firefighter was transported with non life threatening injuries. all searches proved negative. stress test saves firefighter's life click for story camp 911 august 6 , 2008 by alan etter dcfd pio the dcfd women's advisory committee is celebrating the completion of its successful 'camp 911', a training program for girls and young women who have expressed interest in becoming a firefighter and/or an ems provider.  the camp began on july 21st with approximately 30 girls between the ages of 13 and 18 training in skills like basic firefighting, emergency responder and cpr.  the camp culminated on august 1st with a live remote broadcast by wttg fox 5's holly morris showcasing what the girls have learned over the two week period we regret to inform you of the death of retired lieutenant william e.cook william e.cook  was appointed march 3,1958 e-5.  he retired november 1,1973 crew of the week engine 23's technicians august 4 , 2008 heavy fire showing on arrival august 3 , 2008 by alan etter dcfd pio heavy fire greeted engine 27 as the crew arrived at this blaze just before 11pm last night (8/3).  this one story vacant home had fire showing from quadrants c and d.  an aggressive operation knocked the fire down quickly with no injuries to either civilians or firefighters.  the cause of the fire is listed as incendiary with a damage estimate unavailable. small blaze in columbia heights neighborhood august 4 , 2008 by vito maggiolo a dwelling in the city’s columbia heights sections was struck by a small blaze on monday morning, august 4th. firefighters arrived at 1333 harvard street n.w. around 6:15 am to find smoke showing from the front door of the three story row dwelling. fire was found in a dryer with flames already extended into cabinets above. the blaze was quickly knocked down, and units worked to halt any further extension and clear smoke conditions. the air unit and an investigator were called in to assist. all occupants of the home were safely evacuated. trees on cars, 2000 block k street n.w. july 31 , 2008 by vito maggiolo several people were lucky to escape serious injury when a large tree came crashing down on their vehicles in the 2000 block of k street n.w. truck 2 was initially dispatched for a tree down call at around 3 pm on thursday, july 31st. the call was quickly upgraded to a rescue assignment when more calls were received reporting possible people trapped. units arrived to find two vehicles underneath a shroud
