inspections. these inspections will cover the proper installation of wood stoves and information on the use and maintenance of wood burning appliances. we recommend regular inspections by a certified chimney inspector. return to top burning permits the town of cape elizabeth allows open burning within the town boarders.  all open burning within the town of cape elizabeth will be in accordance with maine forestry department laws & regulations. the public safety communications center, under the authority of the chief of department may issue open burning permits to residents of the town of cape elizabeth. all applicants for permits must be the landowner, or an authorized user of the land and at least 18 years of age.  the applicant must provide the communications center a telephone number that they can be reached at during the open burning and after the burning, in the event of rekindle.  permits will be issued after approximately 0830 hours.  this will allow for the communications center to receive the maine department of conservation fire weather report and class day.  permits may only be issued on class 1 or 2 day, when the wind speed is less than 10 mph.  permits may only be issued on the day that the burning will occur, unless the chief of department makes a pre-approved exception. permits for the burning of brush, slash, vegetation & wood products must be completely extinguished by 2100 hours.  permits for camp & bon fires may be permitted until 2400 hours.  the chief of department may alter these times on a case-by-case basis.  tools and water supply must also be present at all sites of open burning, the chief of department may alter these requirements on a case-by-case basis. contractors: contractors must have a site inspection by the chief of department, deputy chief, or fire officer before any open burning permits may be issued. contractors should be notified that the communications center will notify the chief of department, deputy chief, or fire officer of the location and he/she will make an inspection as time permits.  the chief of department, deputy chief, or officer performing the inspection will issue the permit and return a copy to the communications center. change of weather conditions: if the weather becomes hazardous for open burning the dispatcher on duty will contact the permit holder by telephone and instruct them to extinguish the fire.  if the permit holder cannot be reached the chief of department, deputy chief, or fire officer should be sent to the location, and relay the instruction. complaints: if a complaint is received about an open burning site, the chief of department, deputy chief, or fire officer should be sent to check the site.  if these personnel are not available an engine company should be dispatched by still alarm to the location.  the officer on the engine should determine if the complaint is valid and extinguish the fire if necessary. return to top about the cape fire department cape cottage station apparatus stationed at this location cape cottage station is located on shore road at the south portland, cape elizabeth line. engine 1 and engine 4 are stationed at this location. there are 25 paid, on-call firefighters. they range from probationary (recruits -- sometimes high school students), to firefighter i & ii trained firefighters with hazardous materials training and driver/pump operator training. they meet on the second monday of each month and train on average at least twice a month. town center station apparatus stationed at this location town center station is located in the center of town on jordan way, next door to the police station. engine 2, engine 3, ladder 1 and forestry 1 are stationed at this location. there are 30 paid on-call firefighters. they range from probationary (recruits -- sometimes high school students), to firefighter i & ii trained firefighters with driver/ladder operator and driver/ pump operator training. they have a business meeting on the first monday of every month and train on average at least twice a month. return to top emergency medical services rescue 1 and rescue 2 are also stationed at town center station. they have 30 paid on-call members. the rescue can provide care up to the paramedic level, the greatest amount of pre-hospital care provided in the state of maine, and must meet state training and license requirements. they respond to over 450 calls for emergency medical care each year. the rescue business meeting is held on the third monday of each month and they train the fourth wednesday an emergency nature. the weteam also serves as a high angle rescue response team. currently the weteam is stationed in the town center fire station where its equipment is stored in a state of readiness inside the weteam command van. other equipment consists of an 8 and 10 foot inflatable and their 18' naiad rhi rescue boat. the weteam typically trains on the first wednesday and saturday of each month to maintain their high level of specialized rescue skills. return to top fire-police the cape elizabeth fire police has 15 regular members who provide traffic and crowd control services at our emergency scenes. their duties include performing road closures, traffic and crowd control at public events, parade details, and road races. this unit meets once a month and trains on a regular
